GM air bag recall overview:
- Who: GM has recalled more than 990,000 vehicles.
- Why: The automaker says the vehicles’ air bags have the potential to rupture.
- Where: The GM air bag recall is active in the United States.

General Motors (GM) has initiated the recall of almost 1 million vehicles over concerns the vehicles’ air bags may rupture.
The recall was published on the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website May 10. The recall applies to 994,763 Buick Enclave, Chevrolet Traverse and GMC Acadia vehicles from model years 2014 to 2017.
According to the recall, the driver’s air bag inflator may explode during deployment, which could send sharp metal fragments into the cabin of the vehicle, potentially causing serious injury or death.
GM said in NHTSA filings that it had received a report that a 2017 Chevrolet Traverse was involved in a crash in March. It said the front-driver air bag inflator ruptured during deployment.
GM dealers were set to be notified on May 10, 2023, with owner notification estimated to begin in later June. Under the recall, dealers will replace the driver’s air bag unit for free.
The company is not facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.
Recall part of larger request
The recall comes as part of a larger request from NHTSA that ARC Automotive Inc. recall 67 million air bag inflators because of the risk that they may explode, Car and Driver reports.
Meanwhile, General Motors has also recalled more than 480,000 vehicles with third-row seats as the seat belts may be faulty.
On Aug. 11, GM announced it recalled 484,155 of its 2021 and 2022 Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV, and Chevrolet Suburban, Tahoe, GMC Yukon and Yukon XL vehicles equipped with third-row seats.
That recall is due to improper rivet on the seat belt buckle assembly, the company says.

Please add me.
We have a 2017 Buick Enclave. Carfax first notified us of the airbag recall. Then the National Hwy Dept sent out a notice. We immediately called the dealership & we were told that no repair can be made until we hear from the manufacturer directly. How is this appropriate?
