Smart plug recall overview:

  • Who: Emporia Smart Plugs recalled 80,000 of its smart plugs.
  • Why: The smart plugs were not adequately grounded, Emporia Smart Plugs said.
  • Where: The smart plug recall is valid throughout the United States.

Emporia Smart Plugs has initiated a recall of 80,000 of its North American smart plug products because they are not adequately grounded and can pose an electrical shock risk to users.

Emporia’s North America Smart Plugs are white with the word “Emporia” printed on the front.

The plugs are intended to allow consumers to monitor energy use and control home appliances through an app, according to the smart plug recall.

The smart plug shock recall affects Emporia’s 120V North American plugs. The plugs are approximately 3-1/2 inches wide, 1-1/2 inches high and 1 inch deep. The smart plugs were sold individually or in multi-packs.

Consumers should immediately stop using smart plugs; company will disable them when called, recall says

Emporia says it has not received any reports of injury related to the recall so far.

There were two reported cases where the smart plugs were not properly grounded and could not operate.

Emporia asks consumers to stop using the plugs immediately and contact the company for a full refund or free replacement. The smart plugs will be disabled remotely by Emporia if they are connected to the internet, and then the plug should be discarded. If the smart plug cannot be connected to the internet, it should be shipped back to Emporia free of charge.

Consumers can reach Emporia at 844-367-6742 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Central, Monday through Friday; via email at support@emporiaenergy.com; or online at emporiaenergy.com/recall

The company is not facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.

A class action was filed against Lenovo earlier this year, arguing the company’s smart clocks were defective because the LED lights “consistently burn out prematurely” and fail to adjust to changing ambient light levels.
