disney baby inclined sleeperEddie Bauer and Disney inclined sleepers were recently recalled by manufacturer Dorel Juvenile Group USA due to concerns over infant deaths.

Affected models are the Eddie Bauer Slumber and Soothe Rock Bassinet (model: BT055CSY) and the Disney Baby Doze and Dream Bassinet (model: BT071DHS).

About 24,000 inclined sleepers are included in the recall which was announced by the Consumer Protection Safety Commission (CPSC) on July 31.

According to the recall notice, the inclined sleeper models were sold at Target, Kmart, Ross, Marshalls, TJ Maxx, and other retailers between November 2014 and February 2017. Each sleeper cost around $60.

Although inclined sleeper manufacturer Dorel says that their specific products have not been linked to any injuries or deaths, other inclined sleepers have been linked to infant deaths recently.

Inclined sleepers help put babies to sleep at an angle and are marketed as soothing products that help parents manage their newborns’ sleep habits. However, these products may be an unsafe sleep option due to the increased risk of airway compression, suffocation, and death.

Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is thought to be connected to suffocation, so authorities such as the American Academy of Pediatrics have developed strict sleeping recommendations to reduce the risk of death.

The American Academy of Pediatrics, National Institutes of Health, Center for Disease Control and Prevention, and others say that infants should sleep on their backs for sleeping and naps until they are one-year-old. They should be placed on a firm sleep surface with no soft objects, loose bedding, or other objects that could lead to strangulation.

Inclined sleepers are thought to violate these recommendations because of their soft parts and other hazards. When infants are placed in an inclined sleeper, they reportedly have the option to roll from their back to their stomach or side. This may lead to suffocation and death.

Within the last few months, several manufacturers have recalled their own inclined sleepers. After infant deaths were reported in connection with the sleep products, Fisher Price recalled nearly 5 million of their Rock ‘n Play Sleepers. An additional 670,000 inclined sleepers manufactured by Kids II and 71,000 inclined sleeper accessories from Fisher Price were also recalled.

With more manufacturers recalling their products, consumer advocates, doctors, and lawmakers are calling on regulatory bodies like the CPSC to recall all inclined sleep products. Many argue that no inclined sleeper is safe and that leaving them on the market endangers children.

“While this Dorel recall is a good development, the CPSC should recall all inclined sleep products,” Rachel Weintraub, legislative director of Consumer Federation of America, told Consumer Reports.

“No inclined sleep products should be available on the market—and whether or not an inclined sleep product has been recalled, parents and caregivers should not use them.”

If consumers purchased an inclined sleeper affected by the recent Eddie Bauer, Disney recall, they are eligible to receive a $60 refund from Dorel.
