Shampoo, benzene contamination recall overview:

  • Where: The shampoo benzene recall is active in the United States.

Unilever has recalled a range of dry shampoo aerosol products made under the brands Dove, Nexxus, Suave, TIGI (Rockaholic and Bed Head) and TRESemmé, due to potentially elevated levels of benzene.

The recall notice was posted to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration website Oct. 18 and applies to certain products made before October 2021.

A complete list of the affected products and consumer UPC codes can be found here.

“Consumers should stop using the affected aerosol dry shampoo products and visit UnileverRecall.com for instructions on how to receive reimbursement for eligible products,” the recall states.

Benzene is a human carcinogen

Benzene is classified as a human carcinogen, the recall states.

Exposure to benzene can occur by inhalation, orally and through the skin and it can result in cancers including leukemia and blood cancer of the bone marrow and blood disorders that can be life threatening.

A Unilever internal investigation identified the propellant as the source, and the company has worked with its propellant suppliers to address this issue, the company said.

Based on an independent health hazard evaluation, daily exposure to benzene in the recalled products at the levels detected in testing would not be expected to cause adverse health consequences, Unilver said.

However, the company is recalling them “out of an abundance of caution.” The recalled products were distributed nationwide in the United States. Retailers have been notified to remove recalled products from shelves.

Unilever has received no reports of adverse events so far relating to the shampoo benzene recall, and no other products from Unilever or its brands are impacted by the recall.

This is the latest benzene-related product recall. Companies have been recalling a number of aerosol and cosmetic products due to the presence of the chemical. Click here to read about more recent benzene recalls.
