crate and barrel push walker recallCrate & Barrel recently recalled their Activity Push Walkers over choking concerns and laceration hazards.

On Aug. 20, 2019, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced that Crate and Barrel would be recalling their Activity Push Walkers.

The CPSC notes that the walkers are prone to damage over time which can expose sharp points and small parts on the toys.

This reportedly poses a risk for choking and laceration, although no injuries have been reported.

The Crate & Barrel Activity Push Walkers stand around 17 inches high on four wheels. The face of these toys includes a variety of activities designed to help with child development.

Affected products have SKU number 124-248 on a small white sticker found on the bottom of the push walker. These items were manufactured in Taiwan and were reportedly sold for $100 exclusively on Crate and Barrel’s website between January and April of 2019. An estimated 1,500 units are affected by the recall.

The CPSC recommends that consumers “immediately” stop using the push walkers, put it out of reach of young children, and contact the manufacturer for a refund. Crate and Barrel will reportedly be offering a full refund for consumers who purchased the recalled products.

Crate & Barrel is a home décor retail chain that aims to “curate inspiration for the home, connecting the creative work of artisans and designers to people and places around the world.”

In order to receive a refund from Crate and Barrel, consumers can call the company at 800-451-8217 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. CT Monday through Friday or 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. CT Saturday and Sundays. Consumers can also email the company. More information is available on the company’s website under the “Product Recall” page.

The CPSC is an independent regulatory agency that was created by Congress in 1972. The Consumer Product Safety Act which created the agency tasked the CPSC with “protect[ing] the public against unreasonable risks of injuries and deaths associated with consumer products.”

To protect consumers, the CPSC takes several actions to reduce the risk of injuries and deaths due to defective consumer products. According to the CPSC’s website, the agency does this by:

  • Developing voluntary industry standards which guide the manufacturing of consumer products
  • Issuing and enforcing mandatory industry standards
  • Banning consumer products if they are so unsafe that “no standard would adequately protect the public”
  • Recalling defective products and arranging for their repair and replacement or consumer refunds
  • Researching potential hazards that can affect consumer products
  • Releasing information and educational materials for consumers through the media, state and local government, and private organizations dedicated to safety
  • Responding to consumer safety inquiries
  • And more

If a product is recalled, the CPSC often works with manufacturers and businesses to inform consumers of the issue and make sure that the recall is properly carried out.

A full list of recalled consumer products is available on the agency’s website. Each recall notice includes information about the recall, which products it affects, the number of products affected, and options for consumers who may have purchased affected products.
