A number of class action settlements opened last month and will be available for consumers to make claims through July and beyond. 

The class action settlements resolve allegations surrounding issues such as improper user tracking, cow mistreatment, price fixing, antitrust claims and biometric privacy violations, among other things. 

A business or entity will often agree to a class action settlement without admitting any liability or wrongdoing as a way to avoid litigation and to appease their customers and the general public.

Facebook to pay $90M to end claims it unlawfully tracked users

Facebook agreed to pay $90 million in a class action settlement that opened last month as a way to resolve claims it unlawfully tracked the browsing activity of its users on external websites to collect their data. 

A group of Facebook users claimed the social networking company unlawfully tracked their web browsing activity by placing “Like” buttons on external websites. 

The class action settlement benefits individuals who were Facebook users between April 22, 2010, and Sept. 26, 2011, who visited non-Facebook pages containing a Facebook “Like” button. 

Individuals who want to be included in the class action settlement must submit a valid claim form by Sept. 22. 

Fairlife settles claims it lied to consumers about mistreating cows 

Also last month, a $21 million class action settlement with milk product company Fairlife began accepting claims.

Consumers argued Fairlife lied to them about the alleged mistreatment of their cows. 

Consumers who purchased a milk product from Fairlife or Fair Oak Farms on or before April 27, 2022, are eligible to make a claim to join the settlement. 

They must submit a valid claim form by Dec. 27 to join the class action settlement. 

Google settles claims it violated privacy of Google Photo users 

Google, meanwhile, agreed to pay $100 million to end claims it violated the Illinois Biometric Privacy Information Act (BIPA) with its Google Photos’ face recognition feature. 

Individuals behind the Google class action claimed the company broke the law by failing to get consent before obtaining their biometric data. 

Residents of Illinois who appeared in a photo on Google Photos between May 1, 2015, and April 25, 2022, are eligible to make a claim to join the class action settlement. 

Individuals must submit a valid claim form by Sept. 24 to be included in the class action settlement. 

Salmon manufacturers pay $85M, end price-fixing claims

An $85 million class action settlement involving salmon manufacturers opened for consumers to begin making claims to join last month. 

A group of direct purchasers behind the class action lawsuit argued salmon manufacturers, including SalMar, Cermaq, Mowi and others, collaborated to fix the market price for the fish

The settlement was made to compensate consumers who purchased farm-raised Atlantic salmon products from the salmon manufacturers between April 10, 2013, and May 26, 2022. 

Consumers must submit a valid claim form by Sept. 23 to be eligible to join the class action settlement. 

Volkswagen agrees to settlement to end defective water pump claims

Volkswagen Group, meanwhile, agreed to a class action settlement that opened for claims last month to resolve accusations the company outfitted certain Audi and Volkswagen vehicles with defective water pumps. 

A group of vehicle owners and lessees claimed in a class action lawsuit that the auto manufacturer was aware that the water pumps on some of its vehicles are made with allegedly defective thermoplastic.  

The class action settlement will benefit individuals who own or lease certain model 2014-2021 Volkswagen and Audi vehicles. 

Individuals must submit a valid claim form by Sept. 8 to be included in the class action settlement. 

Disposable contact manufacturers settle to end antitrust claims

Also in June, a $75 million class action settlement made to resolve antitrust claims involving a group of disposable contact manufacturers, including Alcon Vision, Johnson & Johnson Vision Care and CooperVision, among others, opened for claims. 

Consumers behind the class action claimed the disposable contact manufacturers worked together to conspire to raise the price of disposable contact lenses. 

The class action settlement was made to compensate consumers who bought certain disposable contact lenses between the periods of June 1, 2013, and Dec. 4, 2018. 

Consumers must submit a valid claim form by Aug. 22 to be included in the class action settlement. 

TK Holdings to pay $84M to end anticompetitive claims

Takata subsidiary TK Holdings has agreed to set aside $84 million from its bankruptcy reorganization plan to fund a class action settlement resolving claims it worked with other manufacturers to raise the price of safety systems in vehicles. 

Direct purchasers claimed in a class action settlement against TK Holdings that the company made anticompetitive agreements with other companies to sell seatbelts and airbags for a higher price. 

The class action settlement benefits direct purchasers of occupant safety systems who purchased parts for them from several companies, including Takata.

Individuals who would like to join the class action settlement must submit a valid claim form by Sept. 23. 

Greystar pays $4.7M to resolve claims it took advantage of tenants

A now-closed $4.7 million class action settlement involving real estate company Greystar also began accepting consumers’ claims last month. 

The settlement was made to resolve accusations that the company may have taken advantage of its tenants by engaging in allegedly unfair debt collection practices. 

Consumers eligible to benefit from the class action settlement are those who resided in a Greystar property in North Carolina from between May 10, 2014, to June 25, 2018, and those who were charged and paid an eviction fee at a Northstar property in North Carolina from the same time period. 

Consumers needed to submit a valid claim form by June 20 to be included in the class action settlement. 

Electric parts manufacturers join $165M settlement resolving capacitor price-fixing claims 

Also last month, two electrical parts manufacturers, Matsuo and Chemi-Con, agreed to pay into a $165 million class action settlement made to resolve price-fixing allegations involving capacitors.

Consumers claimed a number of electrical parts manufacturers worked together to artificially raise the price for capacitors. 

The class action settlement will benefit consumers who purchased tantalum, aluminum or film capacitors directly from one of the accused manufacturers from between Jan. 1, 2002, and Dec. 31, 2013. 

Individuals who want to be included in the class action settlement must submit a valid claim form by July 29. 

Lemonade paying $4M to end claims it violated BIPA with video claim submissions 

Insurance company Lemonade agreed to pay $4 million last month to resolve allegations that it violated BIPA with its video claim submission feature

Consumers claim Lemonade violated BIPA by collecting their biometric data without their consent during video claim submissions. 

The class action settlement will benefit a nationwide class of consumers who provided Lemonade with a video claim submission for a notice of loss from between June 25, 2019, and May 27, 2021.

Consumers must submit a valid claim form by Aug. 22 to be included in the class action settlement.
