A recent Hill’s Petn Nutrition class action lawsuit claims that Science Diet dog food can cause vitamin D toxicity, leading to pet deaths.
Plaintiff Alexandra Boggio reportedly fed her three dogs Science Diet canned dog food for years before the recall and considered herself a loyal customer. Boggio fed the food to her two French Bulldogs Buddha and Sasha and to her English Bulldog Maxine.
Her dogs reportedly ate numerous flavors of canned dog food including: Science Diet Adult 7+ Healthy Cuisine Roasted Chicken, Carrots & Spinach Stew; Science Diet Adult 7+ Beef & Barley Entrée; and Science Diet Healthy Cuisine Adult 7+ Braised Beef, Carrots & Peas Stew.
In late 2018, Boggio reportedly noticed that her dogs started to suffer from suspicious symptoms including excessive vomiting. Buddha reportedly developed additional vitamin D toxicity symptoms in February 2019, including extreme lethargy and incontinence, and Boggio was forced to euthanize the dog in the same month.
After the death of her beloved pet, Boggio reportedly switched her dogs off of Science Diet canned dog food and her remaining two animal began to recover from their symptoms. In her recent Science Diet dog food class action, Boggio claims that her dogs were suffering from vitamin D poisoning and that their food was included in a Science Diet recall announced in early 2019.
Hill’s recalled several varieties of their Science Diet and Prescription Diet canned dog foods in January 2019. The voluntary recall was expanded in March to include an additional lot of products. An estimated 13,500,000 cans are included in the massive dog food recall. A full list of the affected dog food types is available on the Hill’s website.
“We care deeply about all pets and are committed to providing pet parents with safe and high quality products,” Hill’s said in their January press release. “Hill’s has identified and isolated the error and, to prevent this from happening again, we have required our supplier to implement additional quality testing prior to their release of ingredients.”
Hill’s pointed to a vitamin premix found in their canned dog food that reportedly contained too much vitamin D due to a “supplier error.”
Although vitamin D is an essential nutrient, too much of the vitamin can be deadly to animals. Vitamin D poisoning may cause symptoms such as vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst, increased urination, excessive drooling, and weight loss. Prolonged exposure to excessive vitamin D can lead to kidney dysfunction and failure.
Boggio claims that she and other consumers would not have purchased the products if they knew they were placing their beloved animals at risk for illness and death.
“Had Plaintiff known that the Products were poisonous and would cause her dogs to suffer from severe symptoms of Vitamin D poisoning, ultimately leading to Buddha’s death and the sickness of her other dogs, her purchasing decisions would have been affected,” the Science Diet class action claims.
Boggio seeks to represent a Class of consumers who purchased Hill’s recalled Science Diet and Prescription Diet dog food. She also seeks to represent a Class of the same consumers from California.
The Science Diet Dog Food Class Action Lawsuit is Case No. 2:19-cv-02360-JAR-TJJ, in the U.S. District for the District of Kansas.

I’ve been buying the dry dog food and my Great Danes & lab and they have all these symptoms and this is ridiculous we can’t count on a dog food company to care for our babies as much as we do!! I am livid!!! I pray nothing happens to my dogs!! Will never use your product again!! I want the money I spent on the dog food returned for care for my dogs! I kept my receipts over time! You are mean heartless people and need to be shut down! I pray for those of you who have lost your babies, I’m so sorry!!
Be glad your babies are still alive. We lost our dog because of their negligence. She went from a healthy 80 lbs to a very scary 59 lbs and died in my arms on my living room floor. When I reached out to science diet they said “we’re sorry for your loss heres a $10 coupon for your trouble” I sent them back their coupon and told them to shove it. We are named in this suit and now we find out after all the vet bills and all the anguish we are limited to $500 for witnessing the worst thing we have ever seen in our lives. To be honest that says a lot for us because ive had 47 surgeries and to watch our dog dwindle away to mere nothing was and still is traumatizing. We have a permanent memorial of our sweet girl and her pictures in every room of the house. She was our first dog and such a beautiful pitbull who didnt know a stranger.

This is sickening that a company can kill our family members and just be like oppose we messed up but it’s fixed now! I do t want money I want to know they get to feel what I felt losing my beloved best friend. I hope they never know that love as a consideration for the love they stole from all those families who lost their best friends as well.
