Seresto Flea Collar Class Action Lawsuit Overview:

  • Who: A Florida consumer, John Czerniak, sued Bayer and Elanco Animal Health Inc., the former and current owners of the Seresto brand of flea and tick collars.
  • Why: The lawsuit stems from allegations that the Seresto collars can sicken and kill pets.
  • Where: Czerniak’s lawsuit is playing out in federal court in Pennsylvania.

At least one of the class action lawsuits claiming owners of the Seresto brand flea and tick collar knowingly sold a product that can sicken and kill pets is progressing through the courts.

On Friday, a class action complaint filed by Florida Plaintiff John Czerniak against Seresto’s former owner Bayer and its new owner Elanco Animal Health Inc. was transferred to an Illinois court for pretrial proceedings.

Czerniak filed the lawsuit in April, alleging his dog Romeo developed seizures and skin irritation while using the Seresto collar, and that the seizures only stopped when he removed the product.

Czerniak’s class action lawsuit is purely seeking economic damages for the Class, rather than relief for any personal injuries or wrongful death, Law360 reported.

His is one of at least three class action lawsuits filed regarding the Seresto collar, after a bombshell report on the Seresto flea and tick collar by USA TODAY and the Midwest Center for Investigative Reporting

Journalists discovered that, since Seresto collars were introduced in 2012, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has received incident reports of at least 1,698 pet deaths related to the product and done nothing about it.

Since the report was released, a Congressional subcommittee called on Elanco to voluntarily recall the flea and tick collars, but the company declined to do so, saying there was no evidence that the collar was to blame for the animals’ deaths.

Since the Seresto collar hit the market in 2012, the EPA received more than 75,000 incident reports related to the collars, including the 1,698 pet deaths and nearly 1,000 involving human harm.

Between 2013 and 2018, 907 incidents were reported with humans, 19 of these incidents deemed severe.

One included a case of a 12-year-old boy who slept in a bed with a dog wearing a collar who started having seizures and vomiting and had to be hospitalized.

The collar was developed by German pharmaceutical company Bayer and sold to Elanco in 2020. Elanco spokesperson Colleen Dekker said the company had sold more than 25 million collars and an incident report rate of .3 percent, and it had investigated all the reports of death and found no link to the active pesticides, USA Today reported.

“There’s nothing that suggests it’s the active ingredients in the collar that’s at fault,” Dekker reportedly said.

In March, weeks after the first report of incidents surrounding the Seresto collar, a class action lawsuit was filed against Elanco alleging the company misrepresented the safety of its products.

In May, another lawsuit against Bayer Corp and Elanco was filed in a Pennsylvania federal court, claiming the pair sold the Seresto flea collar despite knowing that substances included in the product could harm pets and owners.

  1. N Scott says:

My GSD wore a Seresto collar for about 4 weeks and had a severe vestibular issue. I removed the collar to make him more comfortable. When he recovered in about 3 weeks I put the collar back on and he had another episode. I removed the collar and am now hesitant to put the collar back on. Had anyone else had this experience with their pet?

  2. Emily Vonachen says:

I started using seresto on my 2 dogs in 2020 in 2020 it was the 1st time my husky had a seizure and he has been having seizures ever since then. This past December (8th) he had a cluster of seizures And I took his seresto caller off the next day. He had not had another seizure until I put a new seresto collar on him on March 1st–36hrs later he had 2 seizures. I took the collar off of him bc I wondered if there was a correlation. I have soooo many vet bills & medication bills from over the years & I’m just sickened by the thought that something that I thought was safe for my dog did nothing but cause him harm.

I lost 2 dogs after wearing Soresto Collars. The first dog wore the Soresto collar for 3 years and developed an auto immune disease, dying less than 5 months after diagnosis. My second dog wore the Soresto collar for 5 years and developed TCell lymphoma. She died on November 14, 2022 after chemotherapy fir over 2 years. Neither dog was exposed to any chemicals previous to wearing Soresto Collars. They were both healthy dogs until wearing the Soresto Collar.

  4. Kelly says:

My beloved dog of 9 yrs died ,5 months ago. She had never been sick. Whenever we traveled, she always stayed at our vet’s kennel. She died there. She was wearing a Soresto collar. I’m still heartbroken.

I wish I had seen this earlier. I have 2 of my dogs fighting for their lives now. My 8 year old kelpie/Aussie had several strokes and has developed tumors. My 6 year old Kangal male has developed a large tumor on his throat that came on quickly and is growing fast. I came across this in my research of why healthy dogs suddenly fail. My kangal has saved my life and now I fear I have killed him. How can you do everything so right to protect them only to have what they tell you to do be what kills them. My dogs are not only my protectors they are my family. I am sick over this

Add me to this. My dog has seizures every two weeks now

  7. Deenean Brown says:

    Please add me
That color had my dog swollen and irritated
His hair around the neck area began falling out and shedding in big patches due to him rubbing up against things trying to find relief
My dog scratched himself badly until he had blood spots in some areas of his neck because the collar had burned his skin down to his underlining pink coat and did not kill anything
My dog was still scratching in discomfort with the collar on and he is a shit-zu that only goes out for a potty break and a 15 min walk
Those collars are dangerous and not good for pets at all!!
My veterinarian had to give me a prescription ointment for my dogs skin around his neck so it could heal and subside all the side affects and pain he had endured while using that collar.
And my veterinarian also started my dog on a non collar flea/ tick prevention plan because he had become extremely nervous and anxious from the effects he had wearing his collar and fearing he would be subjected to continuing daily use.
He was given tablets that he takes by mouth and he has not had any problems. He takes one tab only one time a month every 30 days.

    Please add me

  8. Barbara says:

My Aussie Shepard, started having seizures, and was unable to stand and walk. I ended up having to put her down. I didn’t realize it was the collar that I had put on her, was causing the issue, until afterwards. If I had known about it, I never would have used the product.

  9. Amy Breitsprecker says:

We had been using Seresto for 6 years. This year it burned our dogs neck, she was lethargic, vomiting and seizing. A trip to the vet for deep cleaning of the area and medications for 10 days.

    1. Judy says:

Two of my loving cats died from acute kidney failure within a week of using Serersto collars. They were both young and healthy cats. Two veterinarians worked to save my beloved cats, but both cats died. We miss them terribly as they were not only pets, but also support animals. My veterinarian bills were over $2500. They had no prior health problems. I am certain the Seresto collars killed my cats.

  10. Luke says:

I bought a seresto collar for my 5 year old boxer. Within 4 hours he was having massive seizures, and whenever he stood up he would walk in circles. I immediately removed the collar and gave him a bath thinking it would help. It’s been a week since I’ve removed the collar and he hasn’t gotten any better. His mind is completely gone at this point and he’s a shell of his former self. Im completely devastated
