Seresto Flea Collar Class Action Lawsuit Overview:

  • Who: A Florida consumer, John Czerniak, sued Bayer and Elanco Animal Health Inc., the former and current owners of the Seresto brand of flea and tick collars.
  • Why: The lawsuit stems from allegations that the Seresto collars can sicken and kill pets.
  • Where: Czerniak’s lawsuit is playing out in federal court in Pennsylvania.

At least one of the class action lawsuits claiming owners of the Seresto brand flea and tick collar knowingly sold a product that can sicken and kill pets is progressing through the courts.

On Friday, a class action complaint filed by Florida Plaintiff John Czerniak against Seresto’s former owner Bayer and its new owner Elanco Animal Health Inc. was transferred to an Illinois court for pretrial proceedings.

Czerniak filed the lawsuit in April, alleging his dog Romeo developed seizures and skin irritation while using the Seresto collar, and that the seizures only stopped when he removed the product.

Czerniak’s class action lawsuit is purely seeking economic damages for the Class, rather than relief for any personal injuries or wrongful death, Law360 reported.

His is one of at least three class action lawsuits filed regarding the Seresto collar, after a bombshell report on the Seresto flea and tick collar by USA TODAY and the Midwest Center for Investigative Reporting

Journalists discovered that, since Seresto collars were introduced in 2012, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has received incident reports of at least 1,698 pet deaths related to the product and done nothing about it.

Since the report was released, a Congressional subcommittee called on Elanco to voluntarily recall the flea and tick collars, but the company declined to do so, saying there was no evidence that the collar was to blame for the animals’ deaths.

Since the Seresto collar hit the market in 2012, the EPA received more than 75,000 incident reports related to the collars, including the 1,698 pet deaths and nearly 1,000 involving human harm.

Between 2013 and 2018, 907 incidents were reported with humans, 19 of these incidents deemed severe.

One included a case of a 12-year-old boy who slept in a bed with a dog wearing a collar who started having seizures and vomiting and had to be hospitalized.

The collar was developed by German pharmaceutical company Bayer and sold to Elanco in 2020. Elanco spokesperson Colleen Dekker said the company had sold more than 25 million collars and an incident report rate of .3 percent, and it had investigated all the reports of death and found no link to the active pesticides, USA Today reported.

“There’s nothing that suggests it’s the active ingredients in the collar that’s at fault,” Dekker reportedly said.

In March, weeks after the first report of incidents surrounding the Seresto collar, a class action lawsuit was filed against Elanco alleging the company misrepresented the safety of its products.

In May, another lawsuit against Bayer Corp and Elanco was filed in a Pennsylvania federal court, claiming the pair sold the Seresto flea collar despite knowing that substances included in the product could harm pets and owners.

  1. Rose Cruz says:

I purchased these collars for my dog and cats. I had one cat who started to develop tumors. I had them surgically removed (which was pricey) and they returned again. I had to put my baby to sleep. I do not recommend these for anyone.

  2. Janet Golubski says:

Several years ago I put a Seresto collar on my 14 pound cat. About 2 months later his face swelled up and he had sores on his neck that stunk so bad. I took the collar off and the sores healed up. He has since passed on and I don’t think the collar was the cause of death but I felt bad he suffered a few months with the collar.

  3. Ann Devers says:

My 13 year old Schnauzer wore a Seresto collar for 3-4 years. About a year after starting he suddenly developed hind quarter weakness that his Vet could not explain. Gradually he lost bowel and bladder control and was on special diets and costly meds. His neurological condition extended to both back legs. He had seen his Vet on a Monday and was doing well in-spite of his neurological problems, Then on Thursday he collapsed and went into a coma, his Vet and I agreed that he was not in pain, so I held him for 6/12 hours and gradually and peacefully he died. He was a happy guy, loved by all who met him. I wish that I never put that collar on him as I believe that it caused his death

  4. Sara Anderson says:

Our dog wore seresto for several years. We rescued him at 6mo old. At 6yrs he out of nowhere starting sneezing blood. No other signs or symptoms of any illnesses. Always a clean bill of health. There was nothing IN his nose or naval cavity to cause this. After a few urgent visits, severe facial swelling and obvious pain our dog was in, they found it was a large mass in his head that turned out to be cancerous. They gave him 6mo MAX. he was only 6. Within a little over a month of his first symptoms, $7k+ vets visits meds etc we had to put him down as his swelling was coming back again and his pain was so bad. We couldn’t let him suffer.

  5. Michele Blackwell says:

My daughter’s cat started losing his hair in several places, the biggest spot was on back of his neck. He has also lost 5-7lbs in the 2 months he wore the collar & 1 month after we took it off him.

  6. Patricia Kemesies says:

    Please add me

    1. Debra hopp says:

My dog went blind , could this be from the Seresto collar

  7. Robert E Walton sr says:

My cat, a American shorthair which we have had since he was 8 weeks old, who has had constant medical care, I.e. annual checkups, vaccinations, etc, developed a tumor in his left jaw after using a Seresto collar for several years. He is 10 years old and a very loved member of our family. He is an inside only cat, lovingly cared for.
I am really upset about this. We buy this stuff to protect our pet babies from vermin and it makes them sick and causes suffering and death. This company should have to pay for medical treatments and compensate owns for the damage they do.

  8. Charlene Roelandt says:

I started using Seresto collars on my dog several years ago. Earlier this year the rims of her eyes started blistering. The vet thought it was just eye infections. Within in 2 weeks lesions started appearing all over her body. The vet took biopsies and then told me that she had cutaneous lymphoma.

  9. Jim Stilwell says:

Our boxer dog Rocky has been very sick several times until we finally remove the collar almost dying one time. Not sure if it’s the collars or not but he’s fine now. Company at minimum should take the collars off of the market until proven safe.

  10. Jayna Lay says:

My baby Jackson wore this collar for yrs and pasted from lymphoma last Aug worst pain of my life to have to put him down so add me I am sure that’s what killed my dog he was only 9 yrs old :(
