Online marketplace Temu faced a trio of complaints recently involving claims the company failed to protect and stole customer data and pilfered copyrighted photos from competitor Shein.
Temu is a digital marketplace headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts, that is owned by the Irish-based Chinese company PDD Holdings.
Temu fails to protect personal, financial user information, class action says
A consumer filed a class action lawsuit against Temu in September over claims the online marketplace uses relaxed security policies that allegedly enable the widespread and systematic theft of its customers’ personally identifiable and financial information.
Temu is accused of failing to comply with “reasonable security standards” that, if put in place, would be able to adequately protect the data of its customers.
The consumer behind the class action lawsuit argues Temu allegedly declines to put such policies in place to gain “short-term and fleeting benefits,” such as saving on compliance costs.
“Defendant’s actions did not come close to meeting the standards of commercially reasonable steps that should be taken to protect customers’ personal identifying information,” the Temu class action lawsuit states.
The plaintiff wants to represent a nationwide class and a consumer fraud multistate class of individuals who registered for a Temu account at any time since July 2022.
Temu lawsuit claims app collects more user data than necessary
A group of consumers filed a class action lawsuit against Temu earlier this month over claims it collects more data from its users than is necessary and in a greater amount than is disclosed.
The group argues experts determined Temu built tools into the shopping app that “execute virulent and dangerous malware and spyware activities on user devices.”
The consumers claim experts found Temu put the tools in “purposefully and intentionally,” and, in an alleged effort to continue stealing data, have “gone to great lengths” to conceal these alleged privacy violations from their users.
“According to these experts, Temu collects user data beyond what is necessary for an online shopping app, including biometric information and data from users of the app,” the Temu class action states.
The plaintiffs want to represent a nationwide class of consumers who used the Temu platform, along with subclasses of consumers from Illinois, California and Virginia.
Temu disputes rival Shein’s claims it used copyrighted images as promotional photos
Shein filed a lawsuit against Temu in September over claims it improperly used thousands of its copyrighted images as promotional photos on the Temu website.
Temu responded to the claims last month, arguing it was unaware Shein copyrighted the images in dispute while acknowledging some website images were “identical” to Shein’s.
However, Temu argued it does not know the copyright for the estimated 30 million images it uses on its website that are spread across about 4 million product listings.
Shein also accused Temu of altering the copyrighted images to conceal that they were allegedly improperly used and sent a letter to the company in June that included examples of more than 8,000 URLs of allegedly copyrighted photos.
Temu claims any alterations were done by third-party sellers and not the company itself and that it was not given an adequate amount of time to review all of the contents of the letter.
Shein secured an emergency temporary restraining order against Temu in July over its copyright claims, with the latter arguing last month the decision was only a “temporary measure” and not proof it was guilty of infringement.
Temu filed its own lawsuit against Shein in July over claims the latter tried to bully it out of the online marketplace through an alleged campaign of intimidation, threats and false assertions of infringement.

I have been a victim of false Advertisiment and promises to get free gifts and it won’t cost me anything to receive them but when I go to get my product they want me to pay money and the product they have on the site is not the same when you get it and when you want your money back they offer 10% of your money back or if you want all your money back and you have to find a way to send it and if you have a cash voucher and they say you can get it back either through PayPal or credit through them if it’s through PayPal when you try to get it then they tell you in order to receive your cash voucher you have to buy more items so it not free because anything they offer free isn’t Free because they say you have to buy more stuff. They take advantage of people and rip people off. I’ve lost a lot of money through them and they leave packages outside people doors so people can steal your package and when you tell them you didn’t get your package they tell you they will refund you the money but only 10% or you can get a credit back when you do that you have to buy more products to get your credit back so they are ripping people off and selling products that people sell and and they send the wrong item making you lose money while they dont have to pay back full price while we lose our full refund.
They said I had several hundred dollars in free bonuses no purchase necessary but at the end of the order always wanted money plus shares to my friends and would post to facebook without my consent
Yes they did that to me on two seperate occasions
Yes I have received email from temu stating that I have one coupons for free items but when I tried to redeem them I have to purchase an x amount of items also I have received email from someone stating that they are from that company it was from someone else I have guardio and they inform me that it was malicious contents
Yes temu says that I have 100’s of bonuses and coupons but still want me to spend money
I have been a user of the temu app. I always want to hear about any failed security data breaches. I have been a victim of stolen data.
Temu has given out my data without my permission
I used Temu but I stopped about 3 months go because they kept telling me I won discounts or free money to my papal or coupons with no obligation no money necessary to get it but all I ebded doing was buying more crap and never received anything free as they stated. It would say share with so many friends but so much but after sharing to hundred of my friends and spending many of dollars they never did what they said. Such a joke of stealing data and peoples information to receive products that the description was deceptive and usually the picture wasn’t matching what untried months later.
I have been told by temu that I would receive about 200 based on past and current purchases but I have not received any reimbursement
I have been a customer of TEMU for years and eery time I would make a purchase they would say that I had coupons for $100’s of dollars worth of products but I ALWAYS STILL HAD TO PAY! Even when shipping was guaranteed to reimburse me for a certain amount because of the product arriving late, it was a credit only for ordering MORE of their products. It’s been just a couple of months since I stopped ordering but also have ordered from SHEIN too!! So the fact that data breaches were happening between the both of these terrible companies says a lot about their standards of lower prices, quality and customer service, satisfaction when it comes to their products. SHEIN is being sued right now for changing their labels on their clothing brands that have chemicals in them that are dangerously toxic chemicals that especially for babies who chew on their shirts etc. They were ordered to stop selling products that are highly toxic yet they changed every label on their clothing to get past the “watchdog companies” so they could continue to sell them but they still just recently got caught! I have several jackets one still with the tags on it from last year when I purchased them. Please ADD my name to the lawsuit if applicable as I have a lot of clothings, items in my possession that still have their tags on them!
I’ve been a victim of Temu from Data breach and false advertising of their pictured products.
