A class action lawsuit has been filed against CertainTeed Corporation over claims that its Horizon asphalt fiberglass shingles have defects that cause cracking, curling, and premature deterioration.

Kim Segebarth says these defects result in water intrusion and cause damage to his property.

In addition, he says CertainTeed made false representations and warranties about their shingles as typical warranties run for more than 20 years.

The plaintiff claims that he purchased a newly constructed home in 2008 and defendant’s shingles were used. He argues that he first became aware of the defects when he received a letter from the developer of the community where his home was built.

The developer explained to him that one of the homes in the community was having problems with the shingles on their house, the plaintiff claims. The letter informed the plaintiff that the shingles were losing granules and experiencing cracking.

In the summer of 2017, the plaintiff says he had his roof inspected by two different roofing inspectors and was told that his roof contained CertainTeed Horizon shingles which were losing granules, experiencing cracks, and prematurely wearing.

Segebarth was told that he would have to replace the roof on his house and that the cost would be more than $7,500.

“Mr. Segebarth was not aware that the CertainTeed Horizon shingles on his roof were losing granules and cracking until he received the results of the inspections in late July or early August 2017,” the CertainTeed class action lawsuit claims.

The plaintiff claims that his shingles continue to deteriorate and lose granules. In addition, the shingles continue to crack and are putting his home at risk of further damage.

The CertainTeed class action lawsuit claims that the defendant’s shingles were all made with a fiberglass base mat coated with asphalt surface granules.

“Defendant has represented and continues to represent to customers that its shingles are premium quality, high performing products,” the CertainTeed class action lawsuit alleges.

In addition, the defendant states in advertising and marketing that its shingles have been tested and meet the required industry standards.

The CertainTeed class action lawsuit states that the defendant “knowingly and intentionally concealed, and failed to disclose that…its shingles routinely deteriorate by cracking, curling, fishmouthing, leaking, and granulating far in advance of the expiration of their purported warranty periods.”

The plaintiff claims that CertainTeed had no intention of providing the services that they set forth in their warranties. Additionally, the homeowner says the defendant knew about these deficiencies for many years as they have been notified numerous times by their customers that its shingles were not functioning as advertised.

In fact, Top Class Actions covered a CertainTeed shingle class action settlement that was reached 10 years ago that resolved very similar claims with homeowners.

Under that settlement, both U.S. and Canadian consumers could receive up to $74 for every 100 square feet that showed damages of cracking, blistering, cold weather curling and other signs of premature deterioration.

The shingles covered by the 2009 CertainTeed class action settlement included Organic Roofing Shingles that were manufactured between July 1, 1987 through 2005

Now a decade later, homeowners in this current class action lawsuit claim CertainTeed ignored customers complaints and concerns and has failed to implement changes to rectify the defects.

Segebarth says he would not have purchased these shingles for his home had the defendant not withheld vital information about the reliability and performance of the products.

  1. Jill Kieslich says:

I had a roofer come and inspect the roof for recent hail damage. He noticed the hail damage and commented on the granular loss. My house was built in 2007 and has Certainteed Shingles on it. What might my next steps be?

  2. Ara says:

I had a new roof put on my house using these shingles under 2 years ago! Most recently I discovered a paint bubble I’m closet on the ceiling. So I got up on my roof and could not believe the condition of my roof! I have at least 50 round spots throughout my roof! These spots are missing the granules and it appears to be the bottom of the shingle that’s showing up. Also on a few shingles the granules are completely gone as other people has stated. The roof cap also has 1 where the granules have come off! Also it’s discolored! I have nail heads coming up threw the shingles also. I live in AZ. I called the company to get a claim started and then they emailed me paperwork to fill out and mail to them! They are out of Pennsylvania! Also I have to cut a sample of these issues by cutting the shingle in various places and mail that. I will be sending pictures also!! They do not send anyone to come look! I hope to find a open suit against them. It’s monsoons season here and I have a roof leak! Been in this house 50 years and never had a leak! This is just wrong!

  3. Chris Alderson says:

Certainteed Landmark installed in 2009. Shingles started sliding off roof in 2019. Certainteed denied claiming no manufacturer defect and blaming “wind, heat, temp change.” All things that roofs are supposed to withstand.

  4. Sherri L. Scott says:

I purchased my home in 2016 and the roof has the Horizon shignles on them. They were estimated to be about 12-15 years old when I purchased the home, which is well below the warranty period Certainteed claims of 30 years.

I just had my entire roof replaced due to granule loss, curling, raising up, cracking and degradation in color.

I would like to be included in this class action lawsuit.

  5. Julie Ellis says:

Had these shingles put on our roof in 2009- have not held up in our climate.
    Wondering what we can do.

  6. Stanley I Roediger Jr says:

We purchased our home in 2019. It has these shingles and they are loosing granular, cracking and lifting. All causing leaks onto the home. What can be done?

  7. Cindy Scott says:

We purchased a home that was built in 2009 with these shingles and they are deteriorating significantly, curling, cracking and losing tons of granules. Would we qualify to be added in to this class action lawsuit as this material has fallen far below the expectation and language that they should last 20 years.

  8. Carl E. Ondraka says:

We had our home built in 2008 with New Horizon Shingles and I just had a contactor/roofer pull (2) full shingles to submit to CertainTeed for warranty claim As soon as the roofer arrived he looked at the roof and stated….. New Horizon shingles……. Your going to need to replace it. He took many pictures and repaired the ridge vent. He found most of the roof is loosing granules, cracking is present everywhere, the shingles are shrinking, and the shingles are not holding down well and are lifting up easily. My gutters are filled with granules. My Prarie Wood roof is turning black due to all the colored granules coming off. I’d like to be added also. I paid extra to have the New Horizon’s installed instead of standard 3-tab.

  9. Michelle Muldowney says:

We built our home in 2011 using Certainteed Highland Slate asphalt shingles. Every time the wind blows we lose shingles, and every time it rains we have a lot of lost granules. We have replaced many shingles in the last 10 years. I have three neighbors whose homes were built during the same time period who have the same problem with their asphalt slate shingles also. We can’t keep spending money replacing shingles every time the wind blows. We’re all sick of dealing with these worthless shingles. How do we join the lawsuit?

    1. Connie Escobedo says:

I’ve had my house for 2 years. After a year and half, I started losing shingles and causing damages inside my house, crater came thru my smoke detector. That was fixed. 4 weeks ago, my roof cap has blown up in the air, and today another sections is sticking straight up.

  10. Wendy says:

I believe I have the defected CetrtainTeed shingles installed on my roof, and shingles had very heavy granules loss.
How can I join this Class Action? Is it too late to join now?
