A class action lawsuit has been filed against CertainTeed Corporation over claims that its Horizon asphalt fiberglass shingles have defects that cause cracking, curling, and premature deterioration.

Kim Segebarth says these defects result in water intrusion and cause damage to his property.

In addition, he says CertainTeed made false representations and warranties about their shingles as typical warranties run for more than 20 years.

The plaintiff claims that he purchased a newly constructed home in 2008 and defendant’s shingles were used. He argues that he first became aware of the defects when he received a letter from the developer of the community where his home was built.

The developer explained to him that one of the homes in the community was having problems with the shingles on their house, the plaintiff claims. The letter informed the plaintiff that the shingles were losing granules and experiencing cracking.

In the summer of 2017, the plaintiff says he had his roof inspected by two different roofing inspectors and was told that his roof contained CertainTeed Horizon shingles which were losing granules, experiencing cracks, and prematurely wearing.

Segebarth was told that he would have to replace the roof on his house and that the cost would be more than $7,500.

“Mr. Segebarth was not aware that the CertainTeed Horizon shingles on his roof were losing granules and cracking until he received the results of the inspections in late July or early August 2017,” the CertainTeed class action lawsuit claims.

The plaintiff claims that his shingles continue to deteriorate and lose granules. In addition, the shingles continue to crack and are putting his home at risk of further damage.

The CertainTeed class action lawsuit claims that the defendant’s shingles were all made with a fiberglass base mat coated with asphalt surface granules.

“Defendant has represented and continues to represent to customers that its shingles are premium quality, high performing products,” the CertainTeed class action lawsuit alleges.

In addition, the defendant states in advertising and marketing that its shingles have been tested and meet the required industry standards.

The CertainTeed class action lawsuit states that the defendant “knowingly and intentionally concealed, and failed to disclose that…its shingles routinely deteriorate by cracking, curling, fishmouthing, leaking, and granulating far in advance of the expiration of their purported warranty periods.”

The plaintiff claims that CertainTeed had no intention of providing the services that they set forth in their warranties. Additionally, the homeowner says the defendant knew about these deficiencies for many years as they have been notified numerous times by their customers that its shingles were not functioning as advertised.

In fact, Top Class Actions covered a CertainTeed shingle class action settlement that was reached 10 years ago that resolved very similar claims with homeowners.

Under that settlement, both U.S. and Canadian consumers could receive up to $74 for every 100 square feet that showed damages of cracking, blistering, cold weather curling and other signs of premature deterioration.

The shingles covered by the 2009 CertainTeed class action settlement included Organic Roofing Shingles that were manufactured between July 1, 1987 through 2005

Now a decade later, homeowners in this current class action lawsuit claim CertainTeed ignored customers complaints and concerns and has failed to implement changes to rectify the defects.

Segebarth says he would not have purchased these shingles for his home had the defendant not withheld vital information about the reliability and performance of the products.

Built house in 2005, used Certainteed Landmark 30 Weatherwood… same story, blisters, excessive loss of gravel and degrading. Is this class action still pending?

  2. Barbara Collier says:

We had our house built in 2003, and the shingle roofing was Certainteed Landmark XT 30, 30 year enhanced shingles. I have a leak in the roof and when the contractor came out to fix it, he said it was the worst roof he had ever seen. The granules were off the shingles and I needed a new roof. I actually went up on a step ladder to see the roof and I can see spots where the granules are missing. This is a 2 story house so I went into the upstairs rooms and checked out the porch roof – the original shingles were the Burnt Siena color – like a 3-D shingle and very nice looking. The porch roof has major sections where the granules are missing and it is now a black roof. Same with one side of the attached garage roof. It is black also – no granules. I just found out about this ongoing issue here online when I tried to contact CertainTeed about why 30 year warranted shingles are only listing 18 years – if that. The roof has been loosing granules for years. Each time i try to click on a “file claim” it says the site is down. Very convenient. I would like to be included in this settlement as well. I have a couple roofers scheduled to give me estimates on replacing the roof – and I may just go with metal.

We had our roof installed in 2010 and our roof on our triplex is destroyed. Lost granules down to the fiberglass, mold in the attic, dry rot due to severe leaking on the eaves. Please include us in the class action lawsuit.

  5. Vickie Laffredo says:

My 84 year old mother had 46 squares of Cetainteed LandMark shingles installed in May 2012. In 2015 we noticed a white mark on one shingle from the ground. Fast forward to 2021 and there are currently 3 shingles on the front roof that you can see the fiberglass backing from the ground and several others that we can see are rapidly loosing granules. We files a claim in June 2021, Certainteed admitted the shingle we sent was defective and offered us $200 to fix the front roof of a $400K house. When we refused the settlement, they sent a guy out to look at it on November 3, 2021. He claimed someone had been walking and crawling on the roof, which by the way has a 45 degree slope. I clarified with him if he was stating an 84 year old woman was crawling on an almost vertical roof or that the installer damaged the shingles. He said he didn’t say either occurred but that ‘someone’ had been walking and crawling on the roof. Currently, we are waiting for Certainteed to contact us regarding his report.

  6. Leslie Bienen says:

Roof cleaner advised that roof is losing abnormal amount of asphalt and that shingles are CertainTeed and are defective.

  7. Laurel Adams says:

My home and 5 others in our subdivision have Horizon shingles. My insurance will cover only half the $25,000 replacement. How can I join the CAL and get some reimbursement?

  8. Lissa B Silbernagel says:

I had Certainteed XL25 shingles installed on my roof in 2001. I have been told multiple times, and by multiple roofers and adjusters that my shingles were losing granules and starting to curl. now they are lifting up in sheets. I want to be included in this lawsuit.

  9. joan Isaacson says:

Im on my 2nd roof with certainTeed shingles. The 1st roof of ceedTeed shingles had a recall shortley after i got them, and they replaced them with more certainTeed shingles. I did not know they replaced them with more certainTeed shingles. we just asumed it was a better shingle, now it is 2021 and the 2nd certainteed shingles are bad again and I need to have them replaced. my insurance company told me that these shingles i have on now have a recall and this was in september of 2021 !. can I still get in on the law suit.

  10. Beth Combs says:

We built our home in 2002. After 10 years we had two different insurance companies tell us that our certainteed roof was deteriorating and they would not cover. We are going to replace our roof. But feel this shingle is inferior. Want to be included in law suit
