Protein false advertising class action lawsuits overview:

  • Who: Slim Fast, Perfect Bar and Beyond Meat have faced class action lawsuits this year revolving around the amount of protein they advertise their products contain.
  • Why: Consumers claim the companies mislead them by falsely advertising the amount of protein their products contain.
  • Where: Class action lawsuits have been filed against companies in several states.

Consumers have filed several class action lawsuits this year accusing companies of falsely advertising the protein content of their products.

The false advertising allegations are a hot button issue for consumers who rely on brands to correctly represent the protein content in products such as shakes and bars.

Slim Fast accused of misrepresenting protein content in shakes

Earlier this month, a consumer accused SlimFast of false advertising by misrepresenting the amount of protein found in its meal replacement shake products.

The consumer argues that SlimFast’s Original Shake Mix product is labeled as containing 10g of protein when it actually only contains 2g of protein.

SlimFast’s Advanced Nutrition Smoothie Mixes and Advanced Immunity Orange Cream Swirl Smoothies, meanwhile, are labeled as containing 20g of protein yet only contain 12g of protein, according to the SlimFast class action.

SlimFast faced a similar class action lawsuit in July from a consumer arguing it misrepresents the protein content in its smoothies and shakes.

The consumer behind the complaint claims SlimFast falsely advertises that its products contain a certain amount of protein, when, in reality, a customer must add milk for it to reach the represented protein level.

SlimFast never “discloses to consumers that they must add milk to receive the amount of protein promised,” the protein lawsuit states.

Perfect Bar misleads consumers about protein content by not taking quality into account

Perfect Bar, meanwhile, faced a protein lawsuit in April accusing the company of falsely advertising how much protein per serving its product contains.

Consumers argue Perfect Bar misleads its customers by not stating how much of the protein can actually be used by the human body when labeling the percentage the product contains.

The protein in Perfect Bar’s product comes primarily from nuts such as almonds, peanuts and cashews, according to the protein lawsuit, with consumers arguing it is low quality and that only 40% to 50% can be used by the human body.

“Consumers … reasonably expect that each product will actually provide the amount of protein per serving claimed on the front of the product package in a form that can be used by the body as protein,” the Perfect Bar class action states.

Beyond Meat accused of misleading consumers in search of plant-based products with more protein

Last month, Beyond Meat was hit with a protein lawsuit accusing the company of misleading consumers by labeling that its imitation meat products contain more protein than they actually do

The consumer behind the complaint argues testing shows that Beyond Meat is not truthful with labeling on the front and back of its packaging that states the protein content of its products.

“Defendant’s advertising and marketing campaign is false, deceptive, and misleading since the Products contain less protein than stated on the Products’ front and back labeling,” the protein lawsuit states.

Beyond Meat allegedly misleads customers about the amount of protein its imitation meat products contain to capitalize on a growing desire for plant-based products to contain the same amount of protein as meat ones.

Please add me. I’ve eaten Perfect Bars and Beyond Meat products for years. It’s a shame companies purposely lie about it’s products hoping consumers are none the wiser. There needs to be a section of the FDA that not only checks for food quality but also to assure the claims companies make about it’s products are actually true.
