Wayne Gretzky OMG gum lawsuit overview:

  • Who: BuChew and OMG gum founder Steven Sparks filed a lawsuit against Wayne Gretzky.
  • Why: Sparks, the founder of BuChew and creator of OMG gum, claims Gretzky lied about the effects of the gum while acting as a spokesperson for the company in order to increase the value of BuChew stock, which he himself allegedly purchased. Gretzky and his wife are then accused of colluding to remove Sparks from his role with the company after he was allegedly made aware Gretzky had been dishonest.
  • Where: The lawsuit was filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court in California.

Hall of Fame hockey player Wayne Gretzky lied about the amount of weight he lost by chewing BuChew OMG gum — harming the company and its founder — while acting as a spokesperson for the weight loss gum, a new lawsuit alleges.

Plaintiff Steven Sparks, the creator of OMG gum and founder of BuChew, claims Gretzky made misleading statements in order to increase the value of BuChew stock Gretzky himself had purchased under his family’s name.

Sparks argues Gretzky eventually came clean to him about his dishonesty, then “colluded” with his wife to have Sparks removed from his position with BuChew.

Gretzky and his wife also instructed BuChew’s new management to inform its inventors the name and likeness of the former NHL player would no longer be used to promote OMG gum, the Wayne Gretzky lawsuit alleges.

Sparks claims Gretzky told him in 2018 that he lost 35 pounds in only six to eight weeks while chewing multiple pieces of OMG gum a day, allegedly also relaying at that time he “loves the taste.”

Gretzky accused of making misleading statements to OMG gum creator

Gretzky’s alleged statements to Sparks were the impetus for himself and other investors to either invest or reinvest in BuChew, the Wayne Gretzky lawsuit alleges.

Sparks claims Gretzky later disclosed to him — in or around February 2020 — he had not actually lost 35 pounds from chewing OMG gum, with Sparks also arguing this reveal was not told to other BuChew investors.

Sparks claims Gretzky is guilty of negligent misrepresentation and fraud. He is demanding a jury trial and requesting an award of $10 million in general and special damages and $10 million in punitive and exemplary damages.

Last month, Labrada Bodybuilding Nutrition agreed to pay $625,000 as part of a settlement to resolve claims that its weight-loss pills — which were featured on the Dr. Oz show — were not as effective as the company presented them to be.
