Recall Check: Hostess Products Recalled for Listeria, Salmonella Contamination

Before firing up the grill, consumers should make sure their hamburger and hot dog buns are not part of a recent nationwide recall on Hostess products.  

On Friday, the company announced that several lots of their Hostess Soft White Hamburger Buns and Soft White Hot Dog Buns may be tainted with listeria or salmonella — two contaminants that can cause serious health problems, especially in young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems.  

Hostess Products Recalled 

The recall is limited to certain products manufactured by Hostess’ co-manufacturer, Best Harvest Bakeries. The recalled Hostess products’ UPC, batch numbers, and best-by dates can be found on the US Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) notice.  

“As Best Harvest Bakeries only manufactures certain Hostess hamburger buns and hot dog buns for Hostess Brands, no other Hostess products are affected, including Hostess bread and bagel products,” notes the agency.  

The recalled Hostess hotdog and hamburger buns were sold throughout the United States, but the company says it has not received any reports of illnesses related to the contamination.  

“Listeria monocytogenes is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems,” warns the FDA recall notice, which also says that salmonella, the other contaminate detected in the Hostess products, can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. 

“Consumers who have purchased an affected product are urged to immediately dispose of the product or return it to the place of purchase for a full refund,” says the recall notice.
