Verizon class action lawsuit overview:

  • Who: Five plaintiffs have filed a class action lawsuit against Verizon Wireless.
  • Why: Verizon allegedly unlawfully charges a Verizon administrative charge that is not disclosed to customers until they receive their first billing statement.
  • Where: The Verizon class action lawsuit was filed in New Jersey federal court.

A new class action lawsuit claims Verizon Wireless has engaged in a “bait-and-switch scheme” by advertising flat rate fees but charging mobile customers a Verizon administrative charge on top of the promised price.

A group of five plaintiffs lodged the Verizon class action lawsuit against Cellco Partnership d/b/a Verizon Wireless and Verizon Communications Inc., claiming they charged the Verizon administrative charge without customers’ consent.

The Verizon class action lawsuit alleges Verizon began charging the administrative charge on its postpaid wireless customers’ bills in 2005. The Verizon administration charge allegedly started at a rate of 40 cents per month and increased on a regular basis.

Currently, the plaintiffs say the Verizon administrative charge is $3.30 per line per month, which is more than eight times the original amount.

“Verizon has used the Administrative Charge as a revenue lever to covertly jack up its monthly service prices and to squeeze its existing subscribers for more cash whenever Verizon desires,” the Verizon class action lawsuit alleges.

Verizon has allegedly improperly reaped billions of dollars from the Verizon administrative charge scheme.

Customers are not informed of Verizon administrative charge until they receive their first bill, plaintiffs allege

Customers are not made aware of the Verizon administrative charge until they receive their first monthly billing statement, “which they begin receiving only after they have signed up for wireless service and are committed to their purchase and cannot cancel without penalty,” the Verizon class action lawsuit explains.

The plaintiffs allege that Verizon provides conflicting information about the reasons behind the charge. On the monthly bills, Verizon allegedly falsely states that the administrative charge is imposed to “cover the costs that are billed to us by federal, state, or local governments.”

The Verizon website allegedly falsely states that the Verizon administrative charge is tied to the company’s operating costs.

The plaintiffs are asking the court to compel Verizon to notify potential customers about the Verizon administrative charge in its advertising and to reimburse Class Members for undisclosed extra-contractual fees they paid.

This is not the first time Verizon has faced a class action lawsuit over allegedly undisclosed fees.

Verizon has also recently agreed to settle a class action lawsuit alleging it violated the Telephone Consumer Protection Act with pre-recorded debt collection calls.

The Verizon Administrative Charge Class Action Lawsuit is Cintia Corsi, et al. v. Cellco Partnership d/b/a Verizon Wireless, et al., Case No. 2:22-cv-04621, in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey.

  1. Lynne Zappone says:

I have been with Verizon for over 20years I am right with all of you I called about my 12.00$ per phone charge that they told me nothing about they tried to tell me they sent me a post card that had it on their but that is a lie. and now this surcharge 3.60 a month per phone which I have 3. a lot of people are getting out of Verizon and going to different phone company’s so the thanks we get for staying and being loyal customers and bailing them out of the poor house is hidden fees. The company keeps telling me I can upgrade my phone I tell them No and now my phone is acting funny just another way for them to suck money out of you a lot of my friends have switched to other companies.

    1. James Lehman says:

Lol Verizon doesn’t make the phones or make money off of them, and has no way to make your phone act different. That would be the manufacturer.

  2. Janifer Gunter says:

Please add me. I’ve been with Verizon over 15 years and have several unexpected charges.

  3. Linda Landrum says:

    Add me

  4. Verizon Customer says:

I’ve been saying this for years. I have been complaining to them about this for years. I’m happy to see something is being done about this. How do I file?

  5. Gino Pascual says:

Please add me. I have been paying for 5g and receiving garbage. My bill is outrageous and I have been with them for 13 years. I believe that I have been overpaying Verizon for years and this is unfair to us hardworking people. They are a major corporation selling our data, sharing our secrets. This company has to be shown that it is not above the law.

  6. Sherry Stedman says:

I am no longer with Verizon but I’ve spent countless hours on the phone with customer service trying to resolve various billing issues. The store manager I dealt with in Santa Monica, CA, lied about the details of a promotion I received and billed me for a free phone. I refused to pay. Please let me know how to join.

  8. Ed K says:

I’ve been with Verizon 20 years. For the last 5 years (at minimum) I have been on the phone with them EVERY OTHER MONTH for HOURS attempting to have additional charges removed from my bill, only to find the following month MORE charges in other categories.

To add injury to insult, for the last year I have had ZERO cell coverage (1 bar) . If I am not on WIFI I can not make calls. This almost cost me my life when a fire broke out on our property and I could not call for help.
Also the LTE option which used to help only a little has recently disappeared from my settings options completely. Verizons has no explanation. Their solution? Upgrade to a new 5g able phone. surprise. surprise.

I am so fed up with Verizons runarounds and empty promises whose only suggested remedy is ultimately UPGRADE to a new device.

How do I get included in this lawsuit? Do I have grounds for an additional lawsuit. Please respond.

  9. Pam Speciale says:

I would like to be added to this is at all possible. I have spent three hours on the phone with them today for the credits they ultimately will give me to resolve the issue. Two hours last month, and one hour the month prior.

    1. Linda Zarif says:

I have been with Verizon for 8 years and have 10 lines on my account. Recently they added a $12.00 monthly surcharge on my account with no explanation. They also added the $3.60 cent surcharge plus taxes on all 10 lines, including three watches. A child’s watch is only $5.00 per month and is now up to $10.00. I am disgusted and have called them but got nowhere with them. I am stuck with them because of all the device payment plans. Can’t afford to pay them off to be able to leave them. Think that is why they changed the payment plans to 36 months. This way, you are stuck with them for a very long time. They are tbieves!

  10. samantha rajapakse says:

I want to be with this suit. been with them for 20 years and I have had charges added to my account, plan changed without me knowing, so much drama.
