Toyota cars fuel pump recall

A Toyota fuel injection pump class action lawsuit argues that some Toyota and Lexus vehicles possess defective fuel pumps.

The pumps allegedly can undergo pressure loss and cause a systemic fuel system failure. Allegedly, a Toyota fuel pump recall issued by the company has yet to remedy the problem.

The Toyota fuel pump recall class action lawsuit was filed by Lenard Shoemaker, a Scranton, Pennsylvania resident. He explains that around June 4, 2018 he purchased a Toyota Tundra for approximately $50,000.

Allegedly, the vehicle’s fuel delivery system was defective at the time of purchase, but neither the manufacturer nor the dealer informed him of this.

According to Shoemaker, he brought his vehicle in for an unrelated service, and while he was there, asked about the recall that Toyota had implemented to deal with the alleged fuel pump injection problem.

The Toyota fuel pump recall class action lawsuit goes on to say that the dealership staff told Shoemaker that they were aware of the recall, but explained that Toyota did not have a fix for the defect.

Shoemaker says that he was financially injured by Toyota’s failure to inform him of the defect. He says he purchased his vehicle specifically because Toyota has a reputation for producing well-made vehicles. He says that if he had known that the vehicle was defective, he would not have purchased it or would not have paid as much as he did for it.

Providing an example of how the alleged fuel pump defect impaired his enjoyment of the vehicle, Shoemaker notes that he wanted to take his Toyota Tundra to go fishing in Canada, but was worried about the vehicle’s performance, and the risk that it could fail during use.

Shoemaker explains that the impellers of the fuel pump either have a lower surface strength or were exposed to drying for a longer period of time, which can cause the surface to crack. Allegedly, this cracking may cause excess fuel absorption, which can in turn, further damage the impellers. This damage to the impellers can worsen to the point that the fuel pump becomes imperative, says Shoemaker.

This problem then can cause the check engine light to illuminate, cause the engine to not run smoothly, or not start at all, says Shoemaker. He goes on to say that the Toyota defect can reportedly cause the vehicle to stall while driving at a low speed. Less commonly, the vehicle can stall while driving at higher speeds, increasing a crash risk.

The Toyota fuel pump recall class action lawsuit says that in addition to financially injuring customers, this defeat can put drivers and others at risk for physical injury or death if their vehicle malfunctions during use.

The Toyota fuel pump recall class action lawsuit provides context for the alleged fuel pump failures, explaining that Toyota sources many vehicle components from Denso Corporation, a Japanese auto parts supplier. The fuel pump pressure failure class action lawsuit explains that Toyota is the largest shareholder of Denso, owning 24 percent of the company.

Toyota fuel pump recall signAllegedly, Denso recognized as early as 2015 that the low-pressure fuel pumps were prone to failure. Denso reportedly filed a patent application in 2016, and in that application admitted that the plastic impellers in the low-pressure fuel pumps “may be swelled due to the fuel and water contained in the fuel, therefore a rotation of the impeller may be stopped when the impeller is swelled and comes into contact with the [fuel pump] housing.”

Shoemaker says that Toyota issued a report in 2019 that articulated that the company started to investigate the low pressure fuel pumps.

By January 2020, 66 Field Technical Reports produced by Toyota explain the problem.

In the spring of 2020, Toyota reportedly implemented a recall in an attempt to deal with the problem.

However, the Toyota defect class action lawsuit says that despite the recall, Toyota has not yet fixed the vehicles. Instead, Toyota has left customers to drive the recalled vehicles, putting its customers at further risk.

I have a 2018 Toyota Highlander ,..they changed out the fuel pump about a month ago,… and already it’s starting to show the same signs of poor performance

The rough idle now idles rough at around 510 rpm
feeling like the highlander will stall from a full stop (at a normal right on red traffic light )

The first 4 blocks of driving feels smooth, as it should ,… but then starts to lag in performance,..
the further you go the worse it gets (feels like I’m dragging a pallet of bricks ) the engine sounds like it’s working much harder to achieve very little in terms of acceleration.

If i had leased this vehicle it wouldn’t be so bad BUT I bought it thinking Toyota was a quality vehicle ,….BUT I was wrong ,…quality is low ,…I bought this for vehicle, for reliability and received, unsatisfactory, inferior, subpar and lousy, second-rate inferior, deficient vehicle that will degrade in value because i of this.

I had the recalled fuel pump replaced on my 2018 Highlander in June. Two weeks ago the check engine light came on. I brought it to dealer the next morning. They identified another failure of low pressure fuel pump and replaced the fuel pump again. Fast forward 8 days and it’s back at the dealer for the same issue. After having it now for two full days the dealership still hasn’t been able to fix the problem. The vehicle only has 18k miles on it.
      Anyone else experienced similar?

Sold old truck that ran fine to downsize. Bought the 2019 toyota tacoma trd off road in oct. 2018. Never was told about fuel pump problems. Got recall notice in March 2010. Have not driven the vehicle since then due to concern for our life. Never got a rental didn;t know we could till august 2020 after repeatedly calling for the fix. Had an apptmnt sheduled 9/29/2020. Had to cancel after we called them to see if fix was in. Never got a non op put on the truck as we kept thinking part/fix would be in following month and didn’t think it was worth the trouble for one month. I just want toyota to take my truck back and give me the amount I paid for it. I need a truck to get on with my life, live in a rural area and drive freeways 4 hours to los angeles to visit new grandchild. Haven’t been able to do anything. There should be a time limit on this where they have to give you your money back for the vehicle. I am not going anymore weeks, months, years…I need my money to buy a real vehicle and not a toyota!!

I have scratch the interior of the rental because I put some things inside. Second I leave next to the border of Mexico I need my truck because I have the SENTRI on the truck. There is no need for me to have to do 2 to 4 hours line when I have sentri and can cross in 10min. Third the rental car can not cross to Mexico. I am desperate I need my car back or can I return it back. Because is a lease vehicle why I am paying for it if I am not using it ? Need answers thank you.

I purchased a 2019 Toyota Tacoma. When I got it, the dealer said there were no recalls and it was good to go. Decided to buy Toyota because of their reliability just to find out that millions of their vehicles currently are not unreliable is beyond frustrating. I’m stuck with a vehicle with an issue that has increased in depreciation due to a fuel pump that is not promised safe to drive. Toyota needs to figure this out and soon.

  6. Jack Rhoads says:

In November 2019 we purchased a NEW Highlander, only to find in January it is a potential life risk to drive it. We have a loss of use and most likely loss of dollars in value .
The car needs to be fixed and we need reimbursement for our monetary loss.

  7. Erica Wilburn says:

I purchased my Toyota because I heard they good things about them especially being good on gas. Please add me

  8. Melissa Cirilo says:

I desperately need help I purchased a Lexus GS sport 2015 and literally within a month started having problems that the dealership ignored to evaluate. Besides being very disappointed in what was supposed to be a luxury car was totally opposite. I’ve made many inquiries about the poor performance and car stalling and the biggest mishap that occurred was my car stalling on the freeway with my young child in the car! Thankfully, it was stop and go traffic so the impact did not immediately result in major physical injuries to me and my son HOWEVER the impact did affect my back in which I now have issues to this day AND my car was totalled! To make matters worse even after I had to get my car repaired the issues continued. Red warning lights , pressure lights constantly remain on and engine was noisy! Their rationale for the issues afterwards were now placed on the car’s accident and they insisted there were no issues with the car and still do to this day! Then I receive a letter in the mail on the recall and now for once everything makes sense! Can anyone help direct me to the most appropriate person or establishment that helps regular people like myself resolve matters such as mine?

  9. Ashley Brown says:

I have been the proud owner of a Toyota Rav 4 since 2009 and have experienced on going problems with the fuel pump. In addition; I have been constantly driving my car to said dealership for repairs, and have acquired the paid invoices that provides the necessary legitimacy and proof regarding this case. It is paramount that you expeditiously include my name to this Top Class Actions Lawsuit.

  10. Bernadette King says:

I choose my Toyota cause I heard great things about the Avalon. I’m a single woman and I can’t afford for my car to breakdown. My job is an hour Away from my home in a rural area where there are no street lights. That’s why I purchased my car.
