Toyota cars fuel pump recall

A Toyota fuel injection pump class action lawsuit argues that some Toyota and Lexus vehicles possess defective fuel pumps.

The pumps allegedly can undergo pressure loss and cause a systemic fuel system failure. Allegedly, a Toyota fuel pump recall issued by the company has yet to remedy the problem.

The Toyota fuel pump recall class action lawsuit was filed by Lenard Shoemaker, a Scranton, Pennsylvania resident. He explains that around June 4, 2018 he purchased a Toyota Tundra for approximately $50,000.

Allegedly, the vehicle’s fuel delivery system was defective at the time of purchase, but neither the manufacturer nor the dealer informed him of this.

According to Shoemaker, he brought his vehicle in for an unrelated service, and while he was there, asked about the recall that Toyota had implemented to deal with the alleged fuel pump injection problem.

The Toyota fuel pump recall class action lawsuit goes on to say that the dealership staff told Shoemaker that they were aware of the recall, but explained that Toyota did not have a fix for the defect.

Shoemaker says that he was financially injured by Toyota’s failure to inform him of the defect. He says he purchased his vehicle specifically because Toyota has a reputation for producing well-made vehicles. He says that if he had known that the vehicle was defective, he would not have purchased it or would not have paid as much as he did for it.

Providing an example of how the alleged fuel pump defect impaired his enjoyment of the vehicle, Shoemaker notes that he wanted to take his Toyota Tundra to go fishing in Canada, but was worried about the vehicle’s performance, and the risk that it could fail during use.

Shoemaker explains that the impellers of the fuel pump either have a lower surface strength or were exposed to drying for a longer period of time, which can cause the surface to crack. Allegedly, this cracking may cause excess fuel absorption, which can in turn, further damage the impellers. This damage to the impellers can worsen to the point that the fuel pump becomes imperative, says Shoemaker.

This problem then can cause the check engine light to illuminate, cause the engine to not run smoothly, or not start at all, says Shoemaker. He goes on to say that the Toyota defect can reportedly cause the vehicle to stall while driving at a low speed. Less commonly, the vehicle can stall while driving at higher speeds, increasing a crash risk.

The Toyota fuel pump recall class action lawsuit says that in addition to financially injuring customers, this defeat can put drivers and others at risk for physical injury or death if their vehicle malfunctions during use.

The Toyota fuel pump recall class action lawsuit provides context for the alleged fuel pump failures, explaining that Toyota sources many vehicle components from Denso Corporation, a Japanese auto parts supplier. The fuel pump pressure failure class action lawsuit explains that Toyota is the largest shareholder of Denso, owning 24 percent of the company.

Toyota fuel pump recall signAllegedly, Denso recognized as early as 2015 that the low-pressure fuel pumps were prone to failure. Denso reportedly filed a patent application in 2016, and in that application admitted that the plastic impellers in the low-pressure fuel pumps “may be swelled due to the fuel and water contained in the fuel, therefore a rotation of the impeller may be stopped when the impeller is swelled and comes into contact with the [fuel pump] housing.”

Shoemaker says that Toyota issued a report in 2019 that articulated that the company started to investigate the low pressure fuel pumps.

By January 2020, 66 Field Technical Reports produced by Toyota explain the problem.

In the spring of 2020, Toyota reportedly implemented a recall in an attempt to deal with the problem.

However, the Toyota defect class action lawsuit says that despite the recall, Toyota has not yet fixed the vehicles. Instead, Toyota has left customers to drive the recalled vehicles, putting its customers at further risk.

Two weeks after buying my 2019 Camry, I took it back to the dealership and told them it was not taking off properly. The service department said it was normal and it was fuel injected. (It was Different than my last car a 2017 Camry )

Fast forward to January 2021 my Camry is sitting in a retaining lot for the service department of Winter Park Toyota, with no way to fix it. It turns out my car is a death trap and not safe to drive.

I have a loaner car, the dealership has no idea when they will have a part to fix it. I was told that there is no fix right now. 18000 Miles and still paying for the car!! Please help how do I get on this class action law suite???

I had a defective fuel pump on my 2019 camry.but I was not informed of the problem.

I was stranded out of town and was in a dangerous situation because car stalled during heavy rush hr in the interstate.
I spent money for food lodgings and was given a car which I need to return in 30 days.
The car car has not been fixed from november till 2020 till march2021.
I have incurred expenses flying food and lodging to return the loaner car.
After returning the loaner car in South Carolina
I could not get a rental car from my local toyota dealership because my car was not in their lot and.they have made no effort to help me get one. I do not understand this policy.i thought they are all toyota dealership.
If I rented a car I would be forced to pay with my own money but they told me I could be re reimbursed.to me this is not a good option since I have to pay the rental immediately
This is a lot of money since the car was not repaired untill march2021
I want to join a class action suit to recover some of my expenses .this does not include my time from getting off from my work.
The only good thing here is I was safe and did not have an accident.

      Thank you

My 2019 camry didn’t take off right either and they told me the same. Its still currently going and they JUST NOW decided to fix it. I was never informed about the recall or the remedy. I had to keep looking myself. It would hesitate then suddenly its like I slammed on the throttle, almost hit a median that way. Engine runs rough. Never ending. My first camry (2010) was nothing like that.

I also have been involved in a life threatening accident on a 2020 Camry from the stalling driving 65 no power no gas can’t turn you are in big trouble. This is so dangerous and toyota has not taken the responsibility of the defected death trap BEWARE. The worst was the wreck now Hertz where I rented the car id not follow the recall and replace the part or find it necessary to let me know this was a problem Ican prove it . They should be liable for mis handling this serious recall .I am being sued from a 3rd party insurance co now for $23.000,00

I have a Toyota Camry 2019 . I was involved in a wreck due to this fuel pump, stalled engine recall

Toyota did not notify me that my car vin was impacted by the recall until Jan 2021

Toyota states that their isn’t a remedy and will update owners when a remedy is available to fix fuel pump I have a case file to Toyota reporting wreck and 3 other times engine stalled an nearly caused a wreck Toyota didn’t offer me any solution until a family member told Toyota Headquarters that they would be going to the press. Afterwards, they found a loaner car to allow me to use until recall fix becomes available Toyota has given me so much incorrect communication about these issues that I am loses faith that the reputation maybe impacted for me I have been a long term Toyota owner and supporter

I purchased a 2020 camary in May of 2020 it is the very first new car i purchased i did so because of the assumed reputation of great quality and long life in the Toyota industry soon after driving the car i noticed wind air sounds coming from the windows i was extremely disappointed, because now I have to take off work to go to the dealership to allow them to do something that should have been handled properly before they delivered the vehicle to me, this never got resolved they attributed to this is normal for this vehicle. Next i noticed that when I’m driving at high speed and attempt to merge to a different lane, I take my foot off the gas pedal and the speed decreases tremendously not allowing me to keep up with the flow of traffic, often causing a near accident sometimes the car hesitates its like in order to keep running normally i have to force gas down the pump constantly keeping my self punching the pedal this 2020 camary has blind spots its difficult to merge safely even when you turn your head, it also drinks a bit of gas, until a couple hours ago after putting a claim in with Toyota i decided to Google the reviews and statistics, and whamo I’m not the only one, the sad thing is that the dealership has to be aware of these harms and didn’t make me aware

  5. Joe says:

My wife purchased a brand new 2019 Toyota Camry xse at the end of August 2019. She traded her 2016 camry for the new model. We had it for about 9 months before we found out about the recall while watching the news where we live. She had complained to me a few times that the car was not driving well and she stated that it feels like the car isn’t getting enough gas, she explains that she has to push the pedal to the floor to get it to move at all. I drove it a few times and had the same problem. We called the dealership we bought it from and they explained that a recall for the fuel pump had been issued for the vehicle, still waiting to hear back from them on whether they have the part in stock to replace it or not. I was able to get an appointment at another dealership but they didn’t have the part in stock either and was waiting on Toyota to send the parts from Japan. Only after dealing with both dealerships Toyota finally decides to send a recall notice to us in the mail and that was 4-6 months ago. We haven’t heard anything else from anyone on the matter. I really would like to get rid of this car and be done with Toyota all together due to there unresponsiveness. This causes so much worry and headache for my family because you can not depend on a vehicle that was supposed to be one of the beat well made, dependable cars on the road. I used to believe
    that, Until now!

  6. Sina Sabury says:

bought a certified Camry 2020 from the Toyota (Knoxville, TN) dealership 26 October, after the second week problems started, the car did not start and after I took to the Toyota repair shop, they found out the earlier owner had same issue couple times. dealer did not tell anything about the recall or other problems, also unnecessarily lied about the free maintenance service of the car. Apparently this model has been on recall as of the March 4th. big waste of time, had to call road side assistance and take few days off. bought Toyota for its liability, huge disappointment.

  7. Bill Ford says:

Purchased a Toyota Camry 2019 ( supposed to be a certified. ) on Nov. 4 2020. I was talking to another dealer on November 30 regarding future service and found out the car was not certified. I called the dealer where the car was purchased and was informed that the certification was canceled due to the fuel pump recall. I told them at that time after be made aware of the problem that I have no intention of driving the car until it is repaired. I returned the car to the dealership on December 1 2020 and received a loaner. After reading the comments on line I called Toyota December 5 2020 they said the fix for my car is available now and does not know when it will be. Call back next week for a ETA.
I am really disappointed in Toyota.
I guess the good news I have a loaner. It could be a long time.

  8. John Thomas says:

Purchased 2019 ES Lexus 350, before the purchase I new about the fuel pump recall and did my research. I was told by Lexus dealers only certain models were affected and a VIN check would clarify if a Toyota/Lexus vehicle was included in the fuel pump recall. When I found the Lexus I wanted, I ran the VIN and no recalls were found. Six months later Lexus has now roped my car into this recall with no answer to the problem in the near future. It is now December 2020, and I first started inquiring in February when I learned of the recall. In February I was told Toyota//Lexus would have a solution by the end of March or early April 2020. Since then they have only added to the recall list, disappointed customers and given no solutions. Toyota the parent company is on the line for the loss of use of these cars, depreciation, repairs, and possible replacement cost.

  9. Clay Norbery says:

2018 Toyota Tacoma TRD 4×4 Sport. Vehicle stalled. Towed to Toyota. Fuel pump recall. I drive a lot of highway miles to work. They put me in a loaner for 7 months. Toyota had not invented the fix yet… Finally got truck back seven months later. Same situation, vehicle stalled. Now its back at Toyota three weeks later. No phone call yet. This vehicle would kill me if it stalled on the highway. What in the heck are we supposed to do. HELP

  10. victoria drake says:

The fuel pump issue is an example of the downturn that TOYOTA has taken in terms of both its product and service. I am enraged to have spent 40K on a brand new Tacoma in 2018 only to find that I drive around waiting for the shoe to drop AS IF I have bought a used vehicle from a shady car dealer. In my mind TOYOTA as a whole , has taken on this stigma for me. This is not the first time a new vehicle was sold to someone in my family while the company had full knowledge of a product defect. The difference at this time for me is that there is a real safety concern. I DON’T WANT TO BE THE STATISTIC THAT MOVES THEM TO RECTIFY THE PROBLEM.
    Shame on Toyota
