honda civicA Honda class action lawsuit alleges that 2016 to 2018 Honda Civics possess a defective air conditioning system.

Plaintiff Andre Wong says he owns a 2016 Honda Civic and was not informed of the air conditioning defect at the time of his purchase. Allegedly, he purchased the vehicle new and no defects were disclosed.

Wong states that over the course of three years, he brought his vehicle in for service related to the AC defect. Honda technicians reportedly tried to repair the problem but have not provided an effective repair.

The defect in the 2016 – 2018 Honda Civics allegedly causes the vehicle’s air conditioning system to malfunction and stop working while the it’s in operation. According to Wong, the problem is caused by a defect in the design or manufacture of the air conditioning condenser unit.

The Honda class action lawsuit states that the air conditioner defect negatively affects the drivers’ use and enjoyment of their vehicles. Additionally, the problem allegedly affects the safety and value of the 2016 – 2018 Class vehicles.

According to the Honda A/C class action lawsuit, the lack of a functioning air conditioner can cause health problems that expose the driver and occupants of the vehicle to an increased risk of injury or death. Allegedly, these risks are exacerbated by the fact that climate control and defroster controls are affected.

In his Honda class action lawsuit, Wong claims that Honda actively concealed the fact that the air conditioners in the 2016, 2017, and 2018 Honda Civic were prone to failure. Allegedly, the company also concealed the health risks associated with the defect.

Wong claims that Honda has long been aware of the defect but makes a practice of refusing to repair air conditioners without charging customers. According to Wong, the company goes so far as to refuse to acknowledge the problem when owners or lessees of the vehicles bring their vehicles in for service related to problems with the defect.

Wong goes on to say that many drivers have requested that Honda provide a remedy for the A/C problem at no charge, but Honda fails to acknowledge the defect. Allegedly, Honda refuses to acknowledge the defect even when it occurs within the warranty period.

The plaintiff claims that Honda further recommends costly repairs to customers which they are forced to pay for themselves.

This is not the first time that Honda has faced complaints over alleged air conditioning defects. In 2012, the company settled similar claims of AC/compressor defects in some Honda Odyssey, Honda CR-V and Acura TSX vehicles. Now, customers are claiming that the problem may plague more vehicles.

I own a 2016 Honda Civic which I bought new at Sierra Honda in Duarte ca my air conditioning unit has 3 leaks compressor shaft seal, a/c condenser and AC evaporator they only cover shaft seal and condenser but refuse to cover the AC evaporator Honda refuses to take responsibility for this lemon system the fact I have only 56000 miles now I’m wondering if I was exposed to chemical from ac evaporator there charging me 2100 to fix there lemon defective air conditioning

    1. NC says:

I am having the same issue. Issues with the AC evaporator. I took my vehicle for AC issues February this year, 2023, for regular service 2 months ago, and now July 2023 again for AC issues and was told it is AC evaporator and not covered. It is extremely frustrating.

      1. Irene Parra says:

Same happened to me they won’t fix it and I know it’s related since it’s the AC I own a 2016 Honda civic sedan. I called Honda created a case and sent 8 emails, left 4 voicemails and no reply since 7/11/23 ridiculous next step is BBB and to lawyer up.

Have 2018 Civic Si and started off on a long trip. Fan started getting weaker and weaker and warmer and warmer. Car sat overnight and was fine next day. Happened again at start of this summer and now barely cools interior on really hot day. Passenger side a little cooler than drivers side. Just got notice in mail about extending the warranty on the compressor main shaft seal. They need to extend warranty on the whole system!!! Losing refrigerant from either a condenser or compressor could hurt other components in the a/c system. Then the dealers will say it was a different part than what is covered and we still get screwed!!

We have a 2021 Honda Passport with around 31,000 miles. While nearly 2000 miles away from home the AC went out. We tried the local dealership up here (could get us in a week after we were due to be home) and the warranty number (sorry, but we cannot help you unless you get it into a dealership for them to contact us). We did get it into a local car repair service who confirmed the condenser was completely out but could not repair it because they could not get the parts. We then called the the dealership we purchased the car from and asked them to order the parts for when we return so we could fix the car before I report back to work as a teacher. They never returned our call. So… now not only do we have to drive nearly 2000 miles back to Florida in late July without an air conditioner but we have to wait until they can evaluate the car before they order parts. This is our first and last Honda.

  6. Lesley Brown says:

I purchased my civic in 2019 have had air conditioning issues in my 2016 Honda civic. In 2021 I had to replace the condenser due to a leak. Last week I was told there was a leak in the evaporator and $2000 later it’s been fixed. Honda said they weren’t responsible for those parts though being fully aware of air conditioning issues in 2016-2018 civics

  7. Suzanne K says:

I am having the same A/C issue with 2016 Honda Civic as reported by Jennifer L. I took it to Honda dealer and they said there is a leak in the evaporator. I had once replaced the condensor in 2019. I am wondering how we can have Honda pay for the A/C system repair or recall the vehicle for defective A/C system. What is the outcome of the 2016 Honda Civic Air Conditioning Problem Class Action Lawsuit filed by Mr. Wong ?

    1. Lesley Brown says:

Literally dealt with the same thing in my 2016 civic. 2021 my condenser went out, and a month ago my evaporator went out. Honda is well aware of the issues yet I’m out over 3k

  8. Jennifer Leesman says:

I bought a 2016 Honda Civic from Carvana and the AC was not working. After using their 90 day warranty their people could not find a leak but said the freon was bone dry. They advised me of the warranty and Honda did a diagnostic which I paid for because it’s the evaporator not the condenser. So it would cost me almost $3k to fix it. I’m screwed basically.

  9. Ann says:

I had problems with my 2016 touring blowing out hot air. They changed the condenser and literally one month after my whole ac unit went out. I took it to a regular mechanic and he told me he was getting a lot of Hondas similar year with same problem. Since honda wanted to charge me an arm and leg for something that was their fault, I ended up having non honda mechanic fix their problem. It was costly but not much as honda dealer wanted. To top it off I did contact Honda of America and they tried to avoid me and when they would supposedly return my calls, they would hang up on me as if the connection was bad. Plus car was purchased in 2016 and problem started in 2019. They put me through hell and I had to get a loan to fix this air conditioner unit because I have 2 little ones. Shame on honda.

  10. Teresa Davis says:

I have experienced trouble in 2022 with the condenser blowing hot air out of one side. And now the air comes on and then blows hot for about 5 minutes then starts again. One big cycle. They are telling me its a clutch. By the way Honda is trying to sell me off market parts so it would be cheaper he said. Have had trouble since purchasing it in 2016….. Price goes from 1900.00 to 2400.00 with off market parts. I’ve always had the car serviced at the dealer, but thinking about changing. Only 65,000 miles on it. Extended warranty expired in Feb. Wouldn’t you know….
