GM put a defective Vortec engine that burns through oil in seven popular GMC and Chevy vehicles made between 2011 and 2014, according to a nationwide class action lawsuit.

Lead plaintiffs Jared Hammond, Steven Newberry, Rey Cruz, and Lyndon Adamson lodged the vehicle safety defect class action lawsuit in Michigan federal court Thursday. They claim that General Motors Corporation (GM) knew from earlier experiences with the Vortec engine that it consumed an “abnormally and improperly high quantity of oil,” but put the defective part in later models anyway.

Each of the plaintiffs claim that they purchased a GMC or Chevy vehicle that came with a Generation IV Vortec 5300 Engine. They say that the piston rings in the Vortec engine do not keep oil in the crankcase.

In addition, the plaintiffs allege that the Active Fuel Management system in the Vortec engines contributes to the problem by spraying oil directly on the piston skirts.

“This oil spray overloads and fouls the defective piston rings, triggering oil migration past the rings,” explains the class action lawsuit. “The migrating oil either burns or accumulates as carbon buildup on the combustion chamber’s surfaces.”

A process meant to vacuum atomized oil from the valvetrain into the intake system further exacerbates the excessive oil consumption problem in the Vortec engines. In addition, GM’s “Oil Life Monitoring System” fails to warn drivers until oil levels are critically low.

The class action lawsuit alleges that 2011 through 2014 models of the following vehicles made by GM were equipped with the defective Vortec engine:

  • Chevrolet Avalanche
  • Chevrolet Silverado
  • Chevrolet Suburban
  • Chevrolet Tahoe
  • GMC Sierra
  • GMC Yukon
  • GMC Yukon XL

The plaintiffs claim that excessive oil consumption by the Vortec engine results in low oil levels, insufficient lubrication, and internal engine damage.

This is far from the first Vortec engine defect class action lawsuit lodged by owners against GM over excessive oil consumption. Earlier this year, consumers from Ohio and West Virginia lodged similar complaints.

The plaintiffs in this class action lawsuit seek to represent those who purchased or leased a GMC or Chevy equipped with the allegedly defective Vortec engine. The class action lawsuit wants to hold GM responsible for damages as well as attorney and court fees.

Do you own a 2011 through 2014 GMC or Chevy vehicle with an allegedly defective Vortec engine? Have you experienced problems with your vehicle’s oil consumption? Tell us about it in the comment section below!

The plaintiffs are represented by Amy E. Keller, Adam J. Levitt, John E. Tangren, and Daniel R. Ferri of Dicello Levitt Gutzler LLC, and W. Daniel “Dee” Miles, III, H. Clay Barnett, III, J. Mitch Williams, and Tyner D. Helms of Beasley, Allen, Crow, Methvin, Portis & Miles, PC.

The GM Vortec Engine Class Action Lawsuit is Hammond v. General Motors LLC, Case No. 2:21-cv-11240-RHC-EAS in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan.

  1. Frank L Cogswell says:

Add me. 2014 Silverado oil consumption lead to motor blown

  2. Steve Stinson says:

I purchased a 2014 Chevy Silverado with the 5.3 l engine in it in 2020. It had 120,000 miles on it at the time and didn’t seem to burn any oil. All of a sudden at 145,000 miles the engine burned 3 quarts in 3,000 MI. My fuel economy has gone down drastically. I just finished a 1700 mile road trip and it appeared to burn 1 quart during that trip. Thank you for your consideration.

  3. Sallie Murphy/Cameron Cliff says:

How do we get in on this suit?

  4. Brian Casey says:

I just brought my GMC Sierra 1500 in yesterday with the same problems that you have. Was told that I will need a rebuilt engine from GMC. $14,000! Just had the dealership charge me $4,000 for a rebuild in May 2021. Will not cover warranty.

  5. CM says:

2011 suburban. Burning oil at a high rate. Oil on spark plugs. Checked dipstick, no oil on it. Rough idle. Always change oil around 3,000 miles. Issue just began at 160,000 miles.

  6. Michael Carl Forbes says:

I bought a brand new 2011 Chevrolet Silverado LT with a 5.3L engine in it. Before it reached 100,000 miles the oil reading on the inside of my truck stated approximately 7% – 10% oil life was remaining before my next oil change. When I checked my oil stick, no oil was on it. I took it to the dealer and they didn’t fix my engine. Only had me doing oil consumption tests. They never fixed my Truck. Now it has a collapsed lifter in it and I can’t drive it. The company i bought the truck from, went out of business. No one has fixed my truck as of today. Now they say I have too many miles on it. I took it to them when it was under 100,000 miles and they did nothing to my engine to fix the problem.

  7. Sallie Murphy says:

My son bought a 2011 Sierra and has had issues as described above. Cylinder 8 is fouling regularly causing stabilization and engine lights to come on and complete and utter engine bucking! It’s a nightmare. Mechanic replaces the plug and noticed oil spillage! Not good.

  8. Ted Gardner says:

I bought my 2014 chev silvarado new, at about 50,000miles it went crazy and started using oil,had to add oil about 3 quarts at a time. I called my local Chevrolet dealership where I bought the vehicle new, I talked to service manager, he told me it probably had trash lodged in one of piston rings and for me to start changing oil every 3000 miles instead of recommended intervals. I have done that and it hasn’t helped.

  9. Jose manzano says:

I have 2014 Silverado same issues burns a lot of oil have to keep checking it already had lifter fail been replaced still the same issue spent 3200 on repairing it!

  10. James Baxley says:

My 2013 Yukon XL Denali with the 6.2 L (L94) engine just blew completely apart with only 106,500 miles. No warning, no indication of a problem, all services done when called for. Engine gone due to #4 cylinder and piston blowing up…$11,000 for a new 6.2 and the labor for install. What was GM’s response…”not our problem!” Beyond pissed!

Any other 6.2 L engines in on this Class Action?
