FordFord Motor Company has announced that it is recalling more than 240,000 SUVs and cars due to a rear suspension part that can fracture while driving.

According to Consumer Reports, the affected models include the 2013 to 2018 model year Ford Flex and Lincoln MKT SUVs that were built from Sept. 12, 2011 to June 1, 2017. Also included in the recall are 2013-2018 model-year Ford Taurus SHO sedans that are equipped with the performance package and Taurus Police Interceptors that were built between Aug. 25, 2011 through June 1, 2017.

Ford has recalled 211,207 vehicles in the United States and U.S. territories as well as 15,281 cars in Canada and 1,396 in Mexico.

Ford has stated that recalled vehicles which travel on rough roads are more likely to encounter the issue. The car company has also said that if this rear suspension part – referred to as a rear toe link – breaks while the car is in motion, there is an increased risk of a crash.

In order to fix the defect, Ford dealerships will remove the left and right rear suspension toe links and replace them with new forged toe links, which will not cost the owner anything.

USA Today states that owners will start to be notified formally about the recall starting on March 2.

Ford owners with any questions can contact the company’s customer service line at 800-392-3673 and reference recall number 20S04. In addition, Ford customers can check to see if their car has been recalled by entering their vehicle identification number (VIN) on the Ford website.

Fortunately, Ford notes that there have not been any reports of injuries or accidents connected with this problem.

However, Newsweek notes that a complaint was made to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in December 2019 from a consumer who stated that when he was driving his 2015 Ford Flex, he heard a grinding noise and then his rear tire bent at an outward angle.

He states that he took his car to a repair shop and was told that the rear left toe link was bad and that there was probably a defective part that Ford is using.

Newsweek also mentions that Ford is also recalling numerous vehicles due to faulty Takata airbags.

The vehicles that are affected by the Takata airbag recall include The Ford Mustang (2004-2014), Ford Ranger (2004-2011), Ford GT (2005-2006), Ford Fusion (2006-2012), Ford Edge (2007-2010) and Mercury Milan (2006-2011).

The NHSTA website says that “Tens of millions of vehicles with Takata airbags are under recall. Long-term exposure to high heat and humidity can cause these air bags to explode when deployed. Such explosions have caused injuries and deaths.”

In addition, Mlive.com states that Honda has also recalled more than 240,000 Odyssey minivans because a wiring problem can cause a fire. The vehicles impacted by this particular recall are the EX-L, Touring and Elite from the 2018 through 2020 model years.
