The Ford F150 may have an oil consumption defect.

A trio of consumers from multiple states has filed a class action lawsuit against the Ford Motor Company over an alleged vehicle defect they say causes excessive oil consumption in some of the manufacturer’s most popular trucks.

Ford knew about the problem with the engines in its F-150 line of trucks for years, the plaintiffs claim, and concealed the effects it has on the greater than normal amount of oil the vehicles burn through. The company’s handling of the issue prompted David Lyman of New York, Timothy Thuering of Ohio, and Vincent Brady of California to file the class action lawsuit in federal court on Jan. 6, they said.

The case pertains to Ford F-150 pickup trucks manufactured between 2018 and 2020.

According to the claims made in the class action lawsuit, the defect “typically manifests itself during and shortly after the limited warranty period has expired,” and poses a risk to drivers and passengers. Because the oil consumption is unpredictable and excessive, it is difficult for anyone operating an effected truck to maintain a consistent level of oil in the vehicle, the plaintiffs say.

“[The] defect can cause unexpected engine stalling and engine failure while … in operation at any time and under any driving condition or speed,” the class action lawsuit says. “This exposes the driver and occupants of the Class Vehicles, as well as others who share the road with them, to an increased risk of accident, injury, or death.”

The Ford F150 may have an oil consumption defect.Consumers have been making complaints about the F-150’s excessive oil consumption for about two years, some directly to Ford, others to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The reports made to the traffic safety administration are accessible online and bolster the plaintiffs’ claims that Ford has known about the problem for years, the class action says.

The plaintiffs say Ford has refused to “adequately repair” the affected trucks without charge, and in some cases has not disclosed the problem to truck owners when the vehicles have been brought in for service due to reported excessive oil consumption. No recalls have been issued for the affected trucks, either the class action says.

The alleged defect often costs owners money to repair, and many would not have chosen to purchase the trucks if they had known of the potential problem, the class action lawsuit claims.

The three plaintiffs are seeing to represent a nationwide Class of consumers who, like them, purchased or lease a Ford truck affected by the alleged engine defect that leads to excessive oil consumption, as well as Subclassed in each of their states.

The class action accuses Ford of violating several federal and state business and consumer protection laws.

Lead plaintiffs Lyman, Thuering and Brady and the proposed Class Members are represented by E. Powell Miller, Sharon S. Almonrode, Emily E. Hughes, Dennis A. Lienhardt and William Kalas of The Miller Law Firm P.C.; Joseph G. Sauder, Matthew D. Schelkopf and Joseph B. Kenney of Sauder Schelkopf; William H. Anderson of Handley Farah & Anderson PLLC; and Jon Herskowitz of Baron & Herskowitz.

The Oil Consumption Class Action Lawsuit is David Lyman, et al. v. Ford Motor Company, et al., Case No. 2:21-cv-10024-GAD-EAS in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan.

  1. Eddie Godfrey says:

I have put 4 quarts in a 2019 with 12000 miles just called ford and they said if nothing is wrong with it they can’t do anything
    Dealer said it’s normal

  2. Vince Doan says:

I purchased a brand new 2020, F150 XLT, 5.0L. Now I have 26k miles. Every 3k miles I have to add a quart of oil. On average every 10k miles oil change interval, the 5.0L consumes 3 quarts of oil. I told the dealer this problem and they told it’s normal. I know it’s not normal. I hope Ford will this right because this is my 3rd Ford.

  3. Gary Stebbins says:

In March (2021) I purchased a used 2018 F-150 5.0L which only had 15K on the odometer. I later found out about the lawsuit concerning oil consumption on these vehicles. My truck is at the dealer today for an oil change. This is the 1st time this truck has been at a Ford dealer since TSB 19-2365 was published. I am the 3rd owner of this truck. Will have to wait and see how this lawsuit progresses. Ford is NOT the only manufacturer with oil consumption issues brought about by CAFE and software issues in modern engines.

  4. Robert Downey says:

I purchased a 2018 F 150 with 10 speed and 5.0. a loud knock began in the motor, sounding like a diesel motor at times, The transmittion whines really loud as well. Still under manufacturers warranty but Ford claims there is nothing wrong with it, ” These parts make these noises” is all they would give me. Also all electrical shuts off randomly for no reason then will turn back on 5 or more minutes later. Ford is aware of these issues and does not care. They refuse to replace or repurchase even though it is still under their warranty. Never buying Ford again. ever.

  5. Dale Nees says:

gone through 10 1/2 quarts in first year. 5.0 engine knocks and sounds like its getting ready to come apart in the top end of the motor. Dealership denied ANY knowledge of problems with these motors the first time i took it in. Last week they said they have already bought back 3 trucks for this issue. Took mine in and the owner said “Not going to buy it back!”

    1. Michael S. says:

I’ve been fighting with Ford and the Better Business Bureau over these same exact issues PLUS my transmission is “Constantly” slipping, shifting from 10th gear into 1st gear and causing the RPM’s to redline at over 7000 Rpm’s and periodically the engine just completely shutting down and stalling leaving me to sit there in the middle of the highway while traffic is coming at me having to swerve and drive off of the road to avoid hitting me.
This is a SEVERE LIFE THREATENING situation and after “6” near accidents in the past 3 months it’s only a matter of time before myself or anyone else driving near me is involved in a serious accident (or worse).
What’s worse is that Ford continues to IGNORE this and continues to put our lives in Danger. This is my 4th Ford F-150 and never had any issues until this 2018 F-150 (Coyote engine) and even after all this I would have continued to support Ford and buy again, but seeing how much they (Ford) value their customers and continues to put my life at risk Daily leaves me to choose to look for other companies that understand what the meaning of “Customer Service” & “Customer Support”.
      Thank you and good luck.

    1. Mark Rivers says:

2018, transmission slipping and banging periodically!

  7. Erin Cook says:

Ordered a new 2019 f-150 with the 5.0, in the 18,000 miles I’ve put on it the truck has been burning 2.5 quarts per 5000 miles. I didn’t save up and pay cash for a new $55,000 truck to get a motor that’s shot out of the factory.

  8. Ken Payne says:

Bought new 2020 F150 oil changed at 3000 miles checked oil at 7945 after hearing about problems DOWN 1 Quart not happy brand new vehicle this is BS.Wished i had none of problem before buying would not have bought.

  9. Steve Roussel says:
