ford air bagFord Motor Company has been hit with a class action lawsuit, issued by a vehicle owner who claims the 10R80 10-speed automatic transmissions in 2017-2020 Ford F-150 vehicles are defective.

Plaintiff Victor M. Orndorff says transmissions in the vehicles can “shift harshly and erratically causing the vehicle to jerk and hesitate between gears.”

Orndorff claims Ford vehicles need automatic transmissions to work properly so the cars can accelerate and decelerate properly.

The Ford class action lawsuit states that Orndorff purchased a 2018 F-150 Super Cab with 10-speed transmission from a dealership in Columbia, Pa. He says after driving his vehicle 6,000 miles, he noticed a “clunking” sound from the transmission.

Orndorff claims he brought the vehicle to the dealership, but was told there was nothing that could be done about the noise.

The Ford class action lawsuit argues that Ford knew about the defect in the automatic transmission in the F-150 vehicles but has refused to recall or replace the parts, stating the sudden shifting is normal.

Orndorff claims he did not know about the defect prior to purchasing the vehicle and would not have bought the F-150 if he had known. Ford did not disclose the transmission defect to Orndorff at the time of purchase, the class action lawsuit states.

In addition, Orndorff alleges that he and other potential Class Members have experienced a loss of money, property and value to their vehicles.

“The first priority of an auto manufacturer should be to ensure that its vehicles are safe and operate as intended to prevent or minimize the threat of death or serious bodily harm,” the Ford class action lawsuit states.

Ornsdorff claims that the auto manufacturer should take all the necessary steps to ensure the vehicles run as intended and inform vehicle owners of any defects that the vehicle may have, and remedy these defects. He added that vehicles are likely to suffer severe damages and may even catch fire if an accident occurs, due to the defect in the transmission.

The Ford class action lawsuit states that there have been other problems with F-150 trucks. In February 2019, Ford issued three recalls, one of which covered 1.48 million 2011-2013 F-150 trucks with six-speed automatic transmissions.

Orndorff says other Class Members have experienced the “clunking” noise when they start the engine, with one driver saying the noise was so loud, he thought he had been hit by another car. Some drivers have reported whiplash because of the rough and jarring shifting, according to the Ford class action lawsuit.

The Ford class action says the plaintiff would likely lease or purchase another F-150 in the future if the vehicle did not have the defect. He added that he would purchase or lease a F-150 again if a court issued an order to make the defendant comply with advertising and warranty laws.

Purchased NEW 2018 F150 super crew with 3.5 ecoboost and 10 speed transmission in October 2018. At 3k miles dealer had to replace transfer case for noise and metal filings in the gear oil. I brought truck back to dealer within 9 months of ownership due to harsh shifting, ( I thought my transmission was going to fall out when downshifting to a lower gear!), and clunking noise coming from drivetrain during normal around town driving. I was able to demonstrate for service manager the clunking. After having the vehicle for 2 days dealer stated it was a “normal” characteristic of the vehicle and no repair was done. Sometimes when backing up and slowly moving the shifter from reverse to drive the engagement is so harsh that you think your were hit from behind from another vehicle. “Smart” transmission seems to have a mind of it’s own at times.

We have this EXACT same issue. Wish we would have known this before buying a brand new 2019 Ford F150 this past January. At 900 miles, the transmission started making a whining noise and became erratic in shifting. Also, the fluid leaked out while driving causing smoke and other major transmission issues. We have taken the truck back 3 times and Ford continues to say there are no issues and it’s all normal. It had to be towed this past weekend because of the issues that occurred and the vehicle became unsafe to drive on the interstate. Tomorrow will be attempt #4 for a resolution. It seems that these vehicles are lemons. We desperately need help trying to fight Ford on this.

I have less than 6,000 miles on my 2019 f150. Have taken it to the dealership and they told me they would reset the system but it would start over. Basically I have been dealing with this since the second day I drove this truck. I don’t think the dealership is going to be willing to fix my problems either. They keep telling me, “that’s just how it is.” If that’s the case I would like to get out of this vehicle.

I live in SC and bought my 2018 F150 new. It is the 10 speed transmission with the turbodiesel. I currently have 31,000 miles on it but have been experiencing the same issue for the last 6-8 months of slipping and rough or delayed shifts. It feels like it’s not in gear then jumps into gear especially when you’re moving slow and not under constant and consistent load. Seems like a transmission about to go out all together. I would like it fixed before my warranty expires and it totally breaks down. I have asked the Ford dealer about it but they have been no help.

I have all the exact same issues With my 2018 F150 mind sometimes comes out of gear completely even at high speeds to work kicks out the cruise control one time I popped it in neutral popped it back in drive and it Made a violent bang in the transmission. Sometimes When I start the truck up in the morning when it’s in park the transmission clunks. Does this lawsuit include every 2018 to 2020 F150 truck owners how do you get involved? The Ford dealer has noted the issues and have heard the sounds but they said their hands are tied if the transmission is not throwing a code super frustrating!

Same issues with my 2018 f150, hard shifting, even slipping badly when pulling out from a stop. Can be very dangerous when pulling out into traffic and your transmission slips and you don’t go anywhere! Has been in the shop 3 times: first they reprogrammed the module..didn’t help. Next they had it for 2 weeks, removed the tranny, replaced parts, didn’t help. 3rd time had it 2 more weeks, removed the tranny, replaced more parts. Just got it back, slipping and clunking as bad or worse. I videoed it today, spoke to the dealership service manager again! I’m fed up. I really like the truck but can’t continue this way… I sent the videos to the dealership…frustrating being without my truck for weeks at a time.

I have a 2018 F150 Super Crew Cab XLT 4×4 with the same cluncking transmission. A lot of jerky shifts with a lot of noise.

  8. JAMES HINTON says:

Have had all the same issues with the first being 2 months after I bought it brand new. Was left on the side of the road with sensor issues which they told me was under the intake. Like clock work has been in the shop every 2 months since I bought it. Today was the worst driving in the rain when it down shifts and had me all over the road. Have talked with Ford motor company an said since dealership can’t find anything there isn’t a problem. Wanna be part of the lawsuit. Jim Hinton

I own a 2019 F-150 w/ 5.0 and 10-speed that has issues. I was in rush hour traffic and with the stop & go traffic when the truck was down shifting between 5th and 2nd gears, I thought my drive shaft was going to fall (snap) off. I’ve been a Ford fan since I was 16 years old, when I bought a 1967 Mustang fastback. I traded my 2000 F-150 for this 2019 F-150 that now has 5100 miles. I was told that the truck had to learn my type of driving but with that many miles it should know already. I brought it in for service twice, first they were going to replace some module and now they want to replace the valve body (haven’t looked to see what is actually involved, but don’t think I want a dealership to tear into my NEW FACTORY TRUCK. I rather have the truck replaced or trade it in). Any advice from anyone. Thanks.

I bought a new 2018 F150 Limited with the 10 speed transmission new on November 30, 2017. After driving less than 6000 miles the transmission started doing some weird shifting so I took it to a dealer in Carrolton, Texas. They said that was normal in the 2018 and reset the computer. As a licensed FAA Aircraft Mechanic of nearly 50 years, I know maintenance issues like this just don’t fix theirselves. I put up with the Transmission issues for the next 67,000 miles till one day it downshifted from 10th gear while driving 70 mph to 1st gear. I had 3 passengers in the truck and at first we all thought we got hit by a Mack truck from behind. I took the truck back to the dealer and advised them, I am not leaving with the truck, no matter what they did to it. I couldn’t sell it without disclosing the issues, no one would buy it, I couldn’t drive it because it was a dangerous vehicle. Having to have a truck in my business, I made a deal on a new 2020 F150 Limited and Ford paid me less than I owed on the 2018. I had purchased “GAP” insurance on the 2018. My position is Ford should reimburse me for the $ 10,000.00. hit I took to pay off my 2018. It’s my opinion that if the truck was defective, and Ford knew it as far back as 2018 and could not or was unwilling to honor the 100,000 mile warranty, then the truck is no different than a truck that was totaled in a crash. Whats worse, is why didn’t Ford advise me my Truck was a Dangerous Truck via a legitimate recall in a timely manner ? I will consider being included in the suit or in the least you can call me as a witness. Ford, your Moral Reputation is on the line. Don’t listen to your bean counters and their CYA immoral legal advice. You have good lawyers that know exactly what the moral High Ground path is to resolve this dangerous, life threatning issue in a fair and timely manner. I did my part and stuck with Ford and bought a new 2020 F-150. Now, please do your part.
