ford air bagFord Motor Company has been hit with a class action lawsuit, issued by a vehicle owner who claims the 10R80 10-speed automatic transmissions in 2017-2020 Ford F-150 vehicles are defective.

Plaintiff Victor M. Orndorff says transmissions in the vehicles can “shift harshly and erratically causing the vehicle to jerk and hesitate between gears.”

Orndorff claims Ford vehicles need automatic transmissions to work properly so the cars can accelerate and decelerate properly.

The Ford class action lawsuit states that Orndorff purchased a 2018 F-150 Super Cab with 10-speed transmission from a dealership in Columbia, Pa. He says after driving his vehicle 6,000 miles, he noticed a “clunking” sound from the transmission.

Orndorff claims he brought the vehicle to the dealership, but was told there was nothing that could be done about the noise.

The Ford class action lawsuit argues that Ford knew about the defect in the automatic transmission in the F-150 vehicles but has refused to recall or replace the parts, stating the sudden shifting is normal.

Orndorff claims he did not know about the defect prior to purchasing the vehicle and would not have bought the F-150 if he had known. Ford did not disclose the transmission defect to Orndorff at the time of purchase, the class action lawsuit states.

In addition, Orndorff alleges that he and other potential Class Members have experienced a loss of money, property and value to their vehicles.

“The first priority of an auto manufacturer should be to ensure that its vehicles are safe and operate as intended to prevent or minimize the threat of death or serious bodily harm,” the Ford class action lawsuit states.

Ornsdorff claims that the auto manufacturer should take all the necessary steps to ensure the vehicles run as intended and inform vehicle owners of any defects that the vehicle may have, and remedy these defects. He added that vehicles are likely to suffer severe damages and may even catch fire if an accident occurs, due to the defect in the transmission.

The Ford class action lawsuit states that there have been other problems with F-150 trucks. In February 2019, Ford issued three recalls, one of which covered 1.48 million 2011-2013 F-150 trucks with six-speed automatic transmissions.

Orndorff says other Class Members have experienced the “clunking” noise when they start the engine, with one driver saying the noise was so loud, he thought he had been hit by another car. Some drivers have reported whiplash because of the rough and jarring shifting, according to the Ford class action lawsuit.

The Ford class action says the plaintiff would likely lease or purchase another F-150 in the future if the vehicle did not have the defect. He added that he would purchase or lease a F-150 again if a court issued an order to make the defendant comply with advertising and warranty laws.

I lease a 2019 F-150 from the moment I drove off with it there’s been issues with the transmission it’s been at the dealer for the last month they’re telling me that it’s a bad torque converter I’ve had that truck in my possession for a total of 15 days and I’m already making my second truck payment.

I bought a 2017 ford crewcab f150 4×4 in November 2019 with 48k miles, 3 days later it was a cool morning when I left the house and the transmission started making clinking sounds and didnt want to shift, so took it to ford and they said nothing was wrong with it, he said those ford 10 speed transmissions are just “squrlly like that…so after 3 more trips like that I gave up…now 73K miles no warranty left and my transmission just locked up in 7th gear and wont hardly take off and wont even go in reverse and ford says it will cost right at $4000.00
I WONT BE BUYING ANOTHER FORD!!!!!

Currently ford has had my 2018 F-150 5.0 for 33 days! My issue is hard shift between 3rd to 4th gears mostly and a clicking noise upon cold start. The noise is a known issue and several TSB’s have been made but none work for this issue. It is the “deceleration rattle” between around 700-2200 rpm. First dealership did both TSB’s and replaced the cam phasers. Now they say it’s “normal”!?! I’d like to be added.

Had a 2016 f150 and loved it. Traded for a 2019 same truck except for the new 10 speed. Absolutely hate how it shifts and surges all the time. I drop gears shift selector down so it won’t go into 10th gear helps some when cruising but not when accelerating. And when pulling into places it will downshift and lunge forwatd.

  5. Andrew Lydick says:

I own a 2019 stx with a ten speed transmission and I have not experienced the “clunking on start up” but I know exactly what he means by the very sudden shifting and heavy jolting just driving normally. It’s scared the crap out of me. My transmission will do this while driving normally.

  6. Duane Goodman says:

My 2018 f150 is in the shop today to have the transmission looked at. Sometimes klonks on startup. Hesitates when shifting from 3-4 and worse when shifting from 7-8. Definitely not normal.

  7. Rodney Wilson says:

I myself have been fighting with Ford about noises coming from the transmission and a vibration that is ridiculous. I have had all attempts made to repair by the lemon law and Ford, yet they say there is nothing wrong and will do nothing about the issue.

  8. Michael Fabian says:

My 2018 klunks when I start it. I can’t figure out where it is coming from. The truck jerks when I put it in drive from time to time. It also hesitates and jumps while driving. It is not always acting up, but it rarely operates as it should.

  9. Tammy Nash says:

    Add me

  10. David Millhollon says:

I have the 2018 F150 Powerstroke and it’s always a roll of the dice whether I’ll be driving Jekyll or Hyde with the transmission. Love my truck, hate the transmission.
