2017-2021 Range Rover Sport Diesel Defect Class Action Lawsuit Overview:

  • Who: Plaintiff Candace Nejat lodged a class action lawsuit against Jaguar Land Rover North America, LLC.
  • Why: Nejat alleges the automaker failed to inform customers about a defect in its 2017-2021 Range Rover Sport diesel vehicles’ fuel system and failed to honor her warranty.
  • Where: The class action lawsuit was filed in New Jersey federal court.

Jaguar Land Rover’s 2017-2021 Range Rover Sport diesel vehicles contain a defective fuel system that decreases its performance if it is driven only on city streets, a new class action lawsuit alleges.

Lead plaintiff Candace Nejat claims Jaguar Land Rover knew about the defect “long before plaintiffs had problems with the vehicle,” failed to disclose the defect to customers, and failed to pay for repairs under the vehicle’s unexpired warranty after it suffered a “catastrophic engine failure” caused by a defective diesel particulate filter (DPF).

Nejat wants to represent a nationwide and New Jersey Classes of consumers who purchased the allegedly defective 2017-2021 Range Rover Sport or other diesel engine-powered Jaguar Land Rover vehicles with a similar DPF system.

2017-2021 Range Rover Sport Diesel Defect

The plaintiff says that in 2017 she was looking to purchase a new, safe vehicle to drive her new baby around during family chores and between work and home. She says she relied on advertising and information about the 2017 Range Rover Sport, particularly information about city driving.

“The vehicle was marketed to Candace by the salesman of the selling dealer as a vehicle that would offer a savings in fuel costs because the vehicle was equipped with a diesel engine,” says the complaint; however, the plaintiff says she began experiencing problems with the car within a few years of purchase.

When she brought her 2017 Range Rover Sport in for servicing, she says she was not told she had to drive the diesel car on the highway to keep it running properly.

Indeed, Nejat claims she only intended to drive the vehicle in the city, and points out it was only after purchase that a service dealer told them it needed to be driven on the highway to keep its fuel filter from becoming clogged, which would lead to poor performance.

No one at the dealership where the plaintiff originally bought the vehicle informed them it needed to be driven on highways or that driving it primarily on city streets would lead to performance issues, the class action lawsuit alleges.

The vehicle has “undergone at least 5 repair attempts,” for a total of 22 days of work trying to fix problems related to the fuel system defect, claims the class action lawsuit.

The plaintiff also alleges she purchased the vehicle with a “New Vehicle Limited Warranty Bumper to bumper 4 years/ 50,000 miles (whichever occurs first),” which Jaguar Land Rover then failed to honor after the vehicle began experiencing problems with its fuel filter at approximately 37,312 miles.

Jaguar Land Rover committed fraud by marketing 2017-2021 Range Rover Sport diesel vehicles for city and highway driving, the class action lawsuit alleges.

Plaintiff is seeking damages, repurchases, refunds, equitable and injunctive relief on behalf of themselves and other 2017-2021 Land Rover Range Rover Sport owners nationwide and in New Jersey.

Jaguar Land Rover faced another class action lawsuit in December 2020, when it was accused of knowingly installing defective Land Rover InControl systems

Nine 2018 Jaguar F-Type vehicles were also part of a nationwide recall in July, after it was determined the car’s airbags contained a mesh layer that could potentially damage them in the case of an accident.

  1. Lance Hoff says:

Our Jaguar F-Pace R-Sport 20D (diesel) engine just blew. Our option was to replace the engine for $28k, or have it hauled to the junkyard. We chose the latter. We were informed at the dealership that this is the worst problem they’ve experienced in the last 30 years. It’s disappointing to buy a luxury car only to be thrown under the bus by the manufacturer – no recall, no warning, no support. Went to Audi – never buying Jag or Land Rover again.

  2. Victoria Riendeau says:

Is there a reason why the suit only covers 2017? There are multiple forums about the same issue for 2016 RR Sports

  3. Trevor Eagleson says:

I have exactly the same issue – 5 attempts to repair the DEF No Start issue, $2500 first go-round, 4 other attempts and now they say it is the SCR for $3400 after they repaired the cross-pipe for the $2500. i am in Canada, is anyone pursuing this issue in Canada?? My case is the poster-child for this issue.

i have a 2017 range rover hse diesel 4 months ago it was in the landrover – jaguar service dept. check engine light came while we was in louisiana.my cousin pulled the codes up and it came back reading p0088-22 high fuel pressure found in fuel system, faulty fuel regulator, restricted in fuel line and faulty fuel line coupling at fuel tank. rail system/system pressure.
P228F-22 fuel pressure regulator, remove pressure sensor or fuel pressure regulator. instead they went after the big ticket and replace the fuel pump that cost $3000 and it didn’t fix my problem.they had no other choice to repair the 2 codes that was mention above. total repair cost was 10,500. 4 months later my wife and was on our way back from florida and the 2017 range rover stop again and we had to pull over and call a towing service and bring it back to landrover jaguar service dept. now they are saying we need another engine that cost $22,000 and the extended warranty is trying not to pay for the repairs.as to say its my fault for the mechancal breakdown. its going on almost 2 months that the vehicle been in the shop and all they did seems like was pulled some codes. hopefully it will get fix one day. we aswell would like to join the lawsuits & settlement

  5. Marisa Miller says:

I have paid for the “No engine restarts incorrect def fluid exhaust” they replaced the tank for $4 grand last March 2022 after waiting 6 months for the parts to come from England. Now a more than year later the same issue now with NO2x needs to be replaced with a cost of $6,200 dollars and now the dealer caused damage to my suspension as it not working after I had my 2016 Land Rover Range Rover Sport HSE Td6 towed. I have contacted the Attorney General’s office of Virginia because this issue has been reoccurring and has not been corrected. Please contact so I can be included in this lawsuit against Land Rover

    1. Alicia Johnson says:

OMG, I have paid out the wazoo for my 2017 Range Rover diesel. It was in the shop for a month. I picked it up Fri 9/22/23 and by the time I got home to my driveway that same light No Engine restarts in 249miles popped right back on.

      1. Sabrina Paul-Noel says:

I fixed this issue by purchasing a diesel car reader. I reset the code and drove in sport mode for three miles. The message went away and hasn’t come back in months. There is a dedicated forum on Range Rover that recommended it.

        1. Sabrina Paul-Noel says:

It’s months and no error. I did this in January and we’re now in October.

    2. Victoria Riendeau says:

I’m having the same issue with my 2016 Range Rover Sport and there are many others. I am also in Virginia.

  6. Carolyn Gilmore says:

Range Rover 2027 sport diesel same problem. I have replaced almost every parts of the diesel fuel system twice in the last year and still goes bad range rover refuses to replace the DPF which is causing all other parts to continue to fail

  7. David Clark says:

DPF filter on TD6 HSE Sport. In conjunction with “unusual and uncommon” oil leaks (service rep words)
Less than 75000 miles Land rover dealers quote for repairs is $22,000 denied liability, dealer serviced, second time into dealership for the DEF issue(first time was “warranty”) car

  8. Janell Byas says:

I currently am having the same issue vehicle showed on May 5th 2023 that I need to drive the vehicle for a certain amount of miles for a certain time frame which I did. Next day while out the vehicle started to make a weird noise after stopping and restarting and still having the same issue. I got the vehicle towed, the car has still be in the shop due to turbo failing and oil getting in the dpf filter which that stated to me that it could not be cleaned even though I’ve spoken with. Multiple diesel engine shops and they said if a little oil was to get in a dpf the easiest thing and cheapest would be to pressure wash out the oil it is June 16 and my car is still in the shop the total price tag to fix the turbo and dpf is over 14k which is ridiculous because I just purchased vehicle back in Jan with 68k miles and had some type of filter replaced before back in Jan but it was only 100-200 dollars. I have reported this to corporate and they told me they would take care of 20% of the cost but I feel like that still isn’t acceptable. Because I even stated it was a glitch or something was defective especially if I did what the vehicle told me to do to do a self cleaning the day prior. This is horrendous and disgusting and from talking to a few folks the dealership has known about these problems they just have not let people aware of the defective issue. I would like to be added to this class action. I have been in rental cars for mainly the majority of the time vs being in a loaner which is odd for a major repair. All this unnecessary out of pokey expenses is crazy. On top of the price tag all together to get something that takes a hour to put on.

  9. Winson says:

Hi I would like to join the class action. Located in Canada Vancouver B.C

I have a Range Rover td6 last week just paid that same part and $8000 repair

  10. Lars Fryland says:

I have a 2018 Discovery diesel with 63,000 miles. I have an extended warranty but both Land Rover and the warranty company are refusing to cover the repairs. I’m being told it will cost me $7,300 for the DPF and a Catalytic converter.
