Polaris Slingshot Recall Overview:
- Who: Polaris is recalling certain models of its Slingshot three-wheeled motorcycle.
- Why: The company said it determined there was a risk that the single rear wheel could detach while driving.
- Where: The recalled motorcycles were sold across the United States.
Certain models of the Polaris Slingshot, a three-wheeled motorcycle, are being recalled due to the fact one of the wheels can fall off.
Polaris made the announcement on its website last Friday, saying it had determined there was a risk that the single rear wheel could detach during driving in some of its models, increasing the risk of a crash.
The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits
Polaris said some of its Slingshots may have rear-wheel studs that were not pressed into the axle fully during the supplier’s assembly process.
“An improperly installed rear wheel stud could lead to loosening of the rear lug nuts, resulting in a loose or detached rear wheel during operation, increasing the risk of a crash,” it said.
The recall involves the Model Year 2020 Slingshot GT, Slingshot R, and Slingshot SL models and Model Year 2021 Slingshot S, Slingshot R, and Slingshot SL.
At the time Polaris filed its defect notification with the NHTSA, eight customers had filed warranty claims related to the issue, AutoBlog reported. It said the recall affected 4,744 vehicles.
“Polaris learned that during the supplier’s press fit assembly process, a portion of the splines is stripped, which prevents the studs from being fully pressed/seated during assembly or when the lug nut is torqued.
“Over time, the lug nuts at the rear wheel can loosen,” Polaris said in its NHTSA report.
Consumers should contact their local Slingshot dealer to schedule a service appointment to have an inspection and repair performed, if needed. The company warned customers not to attempt repairs by themselves.
Polaris has notified dealers and is contacting all affected registered owners directly by mail, and email if available, next week, it said.
In May, a group of drivers filed a class action lawsuit alleging Polaris is putting its customers at risk of serious injury or death by lying about the safety of its off-road utility terrain vehicles and falsifying specifications to make UTVs pass Occupational Safety and Health Administration requirements.
