Whirlpool has agreed to pay $21 million to resolve claims that some of their refrigerators have defective drain tubes that may cause water to leak into the freezer.

The leaky refrigerator settlement will benefits consumers who purchased certain Whirlpool-manufactured refrigerators, acquired the refrigerators as part of a home purchase or remodel, or who received the refrigerators as a gift. A full list of eligible models is available on the settlement website.

The refrigerators covered in this settlement were sold under the Whirlpool, Amana, Jenn-Air and KitchenAid brands.

Plaintiff Julie Corzine filed her refrigerator class action lawsuit against Whirlpool and Maytag in November 2015. She claimed that some of their refrigerator models have a defect that leads to a buildup of ice that eventually causes water leakage from the bottom of the appliances.

Whirlpool attempted to dodge the suit but was forced to face the claims by a federal judge in October 2016. While the judge dismissed some negligence claims, she found that the plaintiffs’ breach of warranty allegations were still able to proceed.

Whirlpool agreed to settle the class action against them in July. Under settlement terms, the company will pay $21 million and will continue its replacement parts program through the end of 2021.

  1. Amber says:

Mine doesn’t build up anything in the freezer at all but it rains inside the refrigerator which then fills up the bottom until it overflows onto the floor. And it doesn’t matter if you have opened the fridge recently or left it open for a few minutes or not, it does it all the time. You have to make sure everything is covered and you don’t put anything in cardboard containers on the top shelf or they will fill up with water and you can’t put anything in the drawers that will hurt to get wet because they fill up with water too. Don’t know exactly where the water comes from but can’t afford to fix it or buy a new one at the moment. We’ve had the fridge for a long time and it’s done it since we got it we just learned to deal with it because it was about all we could afford to do.

I have been trying to find out if my model is included in the GROUP B. My computer no matter what I have tried views the site as a threat. So, I am including my model number and I promise I will now stop fussing at the kids about the ice build-up in the bottom of the unit.

I have a whirlpool side by side fridge that the ice dispenser stopped working. Looks like thousands of people are affected by this issue. The problem? Their faulty design! The wires on the bottom of the freezer door hardens and snap causing the electrical to not work. No way to prevent this. Opening and closing the freezer door will cause this problem over time to every owner.

  10. Barbara Powell says:

i submitted a claim during the hearing and repaired the refridge but the damage was much more than 150.00 i had to replace my floor since i was on the 2nd floor it required new insulation and new wood because of rotten wood trusses.. plus the labor and parts were over 200.00..
so please any bit of cash at this point is warented
