Whirlpool leaky refrigerator class action settlement update:

Whirlpool has agreed to pay $21 million to resolve claims that some of their refrigerators have defective drain tubes that may cause water to leak into the freezer.

The leaky refrigerator settlement will benefits consumers who purchased certain Whirlpool-manufactured refrigerators, acquired the refrigerators as part of a home purchase or remodel, or who received the refrigerators as a gift. A full list of eligible models is available on the settlement website.

The refrigerators covered in this settlement were sold under the Whirlpool, Amana, Jenn-Air and KitchenAid brands.

Plaintiff Julie Corzine filed her refrigerator class action lawsuit against Whirlpool and Maytag in November 2015. She claimed that some of their refrigerator models have a defect that leads to a buildup of ice that eventually causes water leakage from the bottom of the appliances.

Whirlpool attempted to dodge the suit but was forced to face the claims by a federal judge in October 2016. While the judge dismissed some negligence claims, she found that the plaintiffs’ breach of warranty allegations were still able to proceed.

Whirlpool agreed to settle the class action against them in July. Under settlement terms, the company will pay $21 million and will continue its replacement parts program through the end of 2021.

Whirlpool refrigerator settlement benefits

Class Members can collect up to $150 in compensation under the Whirlpool refrigerator settlement terms.

The amount each Class Member will be reimbursed for depends on when the repairs were made. More information can be found in the “Potential Award” section below.

The final approval hearing in the Whirlpool refrigerator settlement took place Nov. 22, 2019.

The deadline to opt out of or object to the leaky refrigerator settlement has passed.

Consumers had until Jan. 22, 2020, to file a valid claim form. Proof is required to validate repair costs.

Consumers can contact Whirlpool about a future ice buildup event until Dec. 31, 2021, for models in Group A and until Dec. 31, 2026, for models in Group B.

Who’s Eligible

Consumers who purchased certain Whirlpool-manufactured refrigerators, acquired the refrigerators as part of a home purchase or remodel, or who received the refrigerators as a gift.

A full list of eligible models is available on the settlement website. Models are split into two groups: Group A and Group B. This distinction is most important in the case of future freezing events.

Potential Award

Up to $150 in compensation, based on the following reimbursement rules:

  • 100 percent reimbursement for parts and labor costs for qualifying repairs paid for in years one to three after purchase
  • 100 percent reimbursement for parts and 65 percent reimbursement of labor costs for qualifying repairs paid for in year four after purchase
  • 100 percent reimbursement for parts and 50 percent reimbursement of labor costs for qualifying repairs paid for in year five after purchase

    I had ice built up twice within 2 weeks. I had repair guy come out and remove the ice from my freezer. It started making loud noise and the refrigerator was not keeping nothing cold. I think they knew about this issue ahead of time and they should have send out information to the homeowners. We shouldn’t have to pay for technician to come and repair the problem. Whirlpool should pay for the parts and for the technician. Just like the car dealer does when they had to repair airbags. It’s no different.

      My husband fixed our whirlpool (bottom) freezer himself as a repair man told him what to do. It has happened twice since we got it. We do not have receipts.

        Same here I had a hole underneath my wood floor…you could see into the crawl space! absolutely rotted out (which also was replaced by my husband) AND ended up just bringing the refrigerator to the trash because NOTHING was stopping the leaking. Between the loss of my barely new $2000 refrigerator…the damaged to the floor and not to mention the labor involved in the fix…I am out of a lot of money (even wrote the company about this) ..and cant even be compensated because I also have no receipts…I will NEVER buy another Whirlpool product again!! After YEARS of being faithful to Whirlpool I feel absolutely deceived!

      I had major leaks on my floor for some time , then discovered the source.

      I purchased parts and repaired the unit myself. I do not have copies of my repair parts.

    My model # is different, but I had the same problem with my Maytag and had to pay to have it fixed. It leaked all over.
