woman unhappy with her whirlpool aqualift ovenWhirlpool Corporation has been hit with a class action lawsuit claiming that the company’s “AquaLift Self-Cleaning Technology” does not self-clean ovens as advertised.

Plaintiff Deanna McEachern says that in April 2015 she bought a KitchenAid AquaLift Oven manufactured by Whirlpool at a retail store in Michigan. Also, one year later, she purchased a Maytag AquaLift Oven manufactured by Whirlpool for her rental property.

The plaintiff claims that she attempted to use the AquaLift feature on the KitchenAid Oven, but it did not clean the oven and she was forced to clean the oven manually.

McEachern alleges that she contacted Whirlpool to let the company know that the AquaLift feature did not work on her oven.  The plaintiff notes that she was told by a customer service representative that “that’s how it works.”

The Whirlpool class action lawsuit argues that an appliance repairman came to the plaintiff’s home to service other appliances, she was told that AquaLift does not work to clean the oven.

“At all times since her purchase of the KitchenAid AquaLift Oven, Plaintiff’s Oven has not performed as advertised and has not ‘self-cleaned’ her Oven, thereby causing her damages. Plaintiff’s Maytag AquaLift Oven, as with every AquaLift Oven, suffers from the same ‘cleaning’ limitations as described more fully throughout this Complaint,” the Whirlpool class action lawsuit states.

The plaintiff says that Whirlpool advertises and markets its AquaLift technology as a main feature that sets it apart from competitors.

Whirlpool sells AquaLift as “‘oven cleaning redefined,’ ‘innovation nearly 50 years in the making,’ and a ‘first-of-its kind cleaning solution that is activated with heat and water to release tough baked-on soils from the oven interior in less than 1 hour’,” according to the Whirlpool class action lawsuit.

The plaintiff claims that Whirlpool has a separate page on its website to show off the AquaLift technology and even shows a video demonstration of the supposed superiority of AquaLift.

In addition, the Whirlpool class action lawsuit states that the company provides a “Quick Reference Guide” which states that, “[h]eavily soiled ovens may require a second cleaning cycle.”

“While this language implies that AquaLift, if at least used multiple times, will remove heavy soil from all parts of the Oven cavity, Whirlpool fails to mention that AquaLift cannot clean the Oven walls and the Oven door,” the plaintiff claims.

Also, the plaintiff states that Whirlpool advertises that AquaLift can be used “frequently to clean tough baked-on soils.”

The Whirlpool class action lawsuit alleges that “Whirlpool’s entire advertising campaign for AquaLift- a key product feature- is false, deceptive, and misleading to reasonable consumers, including in Michigan, because, contrary to Whirlpool’s representations, AquaLift does not ‘self-clean’ the interior of the Ovens and, instead, requires consumers to manually clean their Ovens with cleaning products – defeating the purpose of a ‘self-cleaning’ oven.”

McEachern states that there are numerous complaints about the AquaLift system online by consumers who claim that the cleaning technology doesn’t work as advertised.

Proposed Class Members include: “All persons who purchased a Whirlpool, Maytag, KitchenAid, or Jenn-Air oven equipped with AquaLift in the state of Michigan.”

  1. Tina says:

Very disappointed purchase my whirlpool oven pool last year. My house is under construction and didnt use until Dec2022. Just recently tried the self clean.Aquau lift technology, doesn’t work. I’m a senior. Who has had knee replacement, and back surgery.. so self clean is the only method I have to clean my oven. And the knobs I very hard to see what the setting is. I don’t know what can be done about my situation. I would love to return this oven, but was told I can’t. I will never buy whirlpool products again.

  2. Megan says:

Horrible oven. Cleaning function has never worked as advertised. Called the company with poor response. Now convection does not work or takes an extensive period of time to preheat. Complete waste of money.

  3. Gayle says:

Purchased my Whirlpool Aqua lift cleaning range September 6, 2019. BUYER BEWARE..THIS DOES NOT CLEAN ONE BIT!. It makes the splatters very sticky, gummy even, but does nothing to clean it. I was so very disappointed, I am a senior who Purchased a new range that I have to try….to scrub clean. It is a very bad joke. Their claims are TOTALLY MISLEADING, Whirlpool SHAME ON YOU!

  4. Brandy Duncan says:

I also have a whirlpool oven with the aqua lift cleaning method. Absolutely useless and had I not been mislead that it was “self cleaning” I would have chosen a different oven.

  5. Carie Louie says:

I have run the self clean function several times and it is useless as a self clean oven. It’s as if it wasn’t cleaned at all even the walls which aren’t as bad as the oven bottom. I contacted Whirlpools customer service as well as their service department but to no avail as they cannot suggest anything else but said I could try vinegar, lemon or baking soda all which defeat the purpose of purchasing an expensive self clean oven! I have tried baking soda paste so far with some elbow grease scrubbing but the oven is still dirty. I’ve read online that Easy Off Fume Free cleaner can be used on self clean ovens but Whirlpools owners manual says not to use chemical cleaners as it may damage the finish. Whirlpools service dept “suggests” that I could try if nothing else works but when I contacted Easy Off customer service they advised to follow the manufacturers instructions So I’m at a loss as to how to clean this oven . So frustrating and if possible would like to join this class action law suit !!! Waste of time and money !

  6. Pamela Jeidy says:

I used the aqualift clean feature on my whirlpool oven for the first time today. Ran in 3 times and the bottom is still not clean. Not to mention the sides and back. The sales person didn’t mention this feature when I bought it; I assumed it was like all the other ovens we have owned in the past. Awful feature and I hope they discontinue it as it is not effective.

  7. Mary Fontana says:

I purchased a whirlpool range with the aqualift selfclean oven a year and a half ago. It does not clean the oven. Has been very upsetting and embarrassing to open my oven doors. I will have to self clean the oven with an old fashion cleaner which will remove the fiinish. However, for right now, I have no other choice. Can I also join this class action suit?

  8. Laverne Mitchell says:

Aqua clean technology does not clean the oven

  9. Bonnie Aparo says:

I purchase a kitchen aid range with aqua lift this year and recently cleaned the oven for the first time because something had spilled. I ran the clean cycle twice. I was able to clean everything off the bottom where you put the water in but the edges and sides did not come clean.I have scraped with the scraper included with the range and scrubber but it is not coming clean. I am going to have to resort to buying oven cleaner and manual clean the oven. This is definitely not a self cleaning oven.

  10. Kathy Holste says:

I purchased the Whirlpool Aqualift self cleaning oven. What a joke! Even after multiple cycles, I need to use ALOT of elbow grease to clean. I would not recommend this “self cleani ng” oven to anyone!
