Refrigerator repair manConsumers are still finding themselves disappointed with the performance of their LG refrigerators due to an alleged cooling defect.

The refrigerators in question are reportedly equipped with a linear compressor which is responsible for the cooling of the appliance. These components cool refrigerators by cooling refrigerant gas which in turn increases pressure and temperature until the refrigerant gas turns into a liquid. Once the refrigerant is converted into a liquid, it is passed through coils where it absorbs heat from the fridge – creating a cool environment.

A defect with the LG refrigerator linear compressor reportedly causes the appliances to fail. This allegedly causes food within the refrigerator to spoil. In some cases, the affected refrigerators allegedly fail within a few years of purchasing the appliances despite LG representations that their refrigerators can last up to 20 years.

Consumers claim that the issue is causing their refrigerators to fail and that LG’s response has been lackluster. One consumer wrote a review on Consumer Affairs, claiming that the experienced repairman was unsure that repairs as drastic as rewiring the whole fridge would fix the issue. This was reportedly after the consumer was forced to pay for a part that did not work with the model as well as repair labor.

One customer asked, “How long before LG is proactive with correcting the problem, and at what cost to us in terms of no cold storage?”

Although one settlement has been reached regarding another LG refrigerator cooling defect, consumer dissatisfaction has prompted new legal action against the appliance maker.

In April 2019, several plaintiffs filed a class action lawsuit against LG. The consumers argue that LG did not disclose that their appliances were prone to defects and instead portrayed their refrigerators as effective and capable of lasting up to 20 years.

“Although refrigerators last 13 years on average, the LG Refrigerators have been failing en masse within 36 months,” the LG refrigerator class action lawsuit claims.

Purchasers allegedly rely on LG representations when shopping for appliances. The plaintiffs argue that they would not have purchased LG refrigerators or paid what they did if they had known about the issues that allegedly cause failure of the appliance.

According to the class action lawsuit, the consumers demand that LG takes steps to “cure the defect and ensure the accuracy of its representations about its refrigerators.”

Despite consumer outrage about LG refrigerators and cooling issues, LG reportedly stands by their products and maintains that they will repair any appliance under warranty.

“At LG, customer satisfaction is paramount. LG home appliances are enjoyed by millions of Americans every day, and we’re proud that our products are recognized by industry experts for their reliability and that LG has been awarded more JD Power Awards for customer satisfaction than any other appliance manufacturer,” an LG spokesperson told Digital Trends.

The LG Refrigerator Compressor Defect Class Action Lawsuit is Case No. 8:19-cv-00610, in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California.

Hi i bought a lg refrigerator and on Thursday it went down and i have been waiting on a repair person to come fix it. I was told it would be 24 to 48 hours its been 96 hours and no one has been here. And i can’t get ahold of a supervisor to voice my complaint. I bought it 2 years ago and got the extended warranty on it. And i paid it off early. I feel that the 3 people i talked to should have taken care of me and told me it was going to be this long and i have eaten something that has made me sick. Do to their games.

    HELP!
My Kenmore elite refrigerator (built by LG) stopped working (Code: Er FF) less than 4 yrs after I purchased it (July 2016) I’ve had 3 techs repair different parts & “NO GO”; they replaced the evaporator fan, the control board & the thermistor. Each time the refrigerator would start & run for a couple hrs, then stop; at the rate I’m going I’ll have a new frig. pretty soon (changing parts). When the frig. fails I can unplug it, wait a couple minutes, plug it back in & it will start & run for a couple of hrs., then stop.
Does anybody have any ideas as what can be causing this failure or what area look-in?
    Thanks

      Update – Dominick

After changing the evaporator fan, the control board, the thermistor, & the thermostat (cost over a

$1000 in parts), this refrig. is going to the “Happy Thrash Dump”.

Same here, wish I would have taken the advise of the first technician to replace it instead of repairing it. We’ve spent about $700 to fix it and will now have to replace it…..:-(

I bought my LG Refrigerator from Best buy just over a year ago and it is making loud motor noises so much that it is waking up at night. rite now it is still cooling but I wan t to chuck it out the door due to the motor noise it is making. Called LG and she wants me to pay $125 just to come out and look and after seeing all the issues with this brand I am very aggravated with best buy for selling something that is causing so many people to have problems.

  6. Sandra says:

It’s me again….Apparently, if you overload the refrigerator with too much food it will block the vents and overload the fridge and it will stop cooling. And from what I have read it can cause permanent damage to the refrigerator. Luckily I took everything out of the refrigerator in time and it only took a couple of days and the refrigerator and freezer is now cooling and freezing again and the control panel works again. You can’t block the vents on these fridges and expect it to keep working properly.

  7. Sandra says:

Our LG french door bottom freezer fridge stopped cooling properly 1 year and 1 month after purchase. I called LG and they are sending someone out one week after I called. I’m not holding out too much hope after reading this article and all the comments. I will not be buying an LG again.

  8. Michele Dammann says:

My LG refrigerator stopped cooling and freezing we purchased this less than 2 years ago. With NO return phone calls from LG so looking for some advice as what to do now?
    Thank you for any help!

  9. Colleen Nelson says:

My 2015 French Door style LG refrigerator stopped working too after only 4 years. Since we paid over $3500 for it, we certainly expected more than 4 years out of it! LG’s response has been wholly unacceptable. They have taken literally months to service it twice, and then it died AGAIN!!! And right at the outset of the pandemic lockdown to boot! So we had to run out and purchase an apartment sized fridge – something in stock – just to be sure we had a place to put our food with no time to shop for a fridge and with an immune compromised child who needs her meds refrigerated. LG has sent no less than 2 technicians out to repair the darned thing – only to have it die again 2 days after the new [still defective] compressor was installed. Unbelievable. So now we have a 4 thousand dollar useless hunk of stainless steel in our kitchen!!! We trusted the LG brand to deliver, but this company is now on borrowed time here in the USA. How many consumers must a company knowingly sell a defective product to before said consumers say “No more LG” and kick them straight to the curb forever?! LG you need to do better!

  10. Brian Bennert says:

We have problem with our LG refrigerator purchased 7years plus 1 months ago. Their customer service has been giving us the royal run around with repair contractors. One of they’re recommendations of contractors we called and he came out and diagnosed a bad linear compressor and stated he would not repair it as it most likely it has contaimminated the capillary tubing through out the refrigerator and will never work properly. Many calls to customer service and got the professional run around with telephone numbers to call. They will not pay for labor to repair because it is past the 7 yr mark by less than 2 months. Furthermore they will not cover compressor part approx. value $350.00 because they did not dispatch the contractor I paid to come and diagnose the problem that they recommended to me to call( they gave me his number). Again calling back customer service I requested a LG Factory trained certified contractor and I would pay again for another service call to find out what the first contractor already told me that they recommended to me and they gave me another number to call . When I called that number they said they can’t do warranty work unless dispatched by
customer service….This is a real company that stands behind their product!!!!. Who in they’re right mind would buy a LG refrigerator, $3,000 for 7 years of refrigeration what a deal. Have been without a fridge for week now and will start looking for anything but a LG… Mentioned to them the class action lawsuit and many many failures listed on the internet and this is their way of dealing with it .. doing nothing !!! If you throw us enough road blocks hopfully they will just go away…….
