Class action plaintiffs say Wahl no rinse waterless shampoo may not be “100% Natural” as advertised.

Wahl Home Products is a company which makes a line of “natural” dog shampoo, deodorant, and no rinse waterless shampoo products. The labeling for these products clearly states that the items are “100% Natural”.

However, a class action lawsuit filed last year alleged that several of Wahl’s products contain synthetic ingredients which are not “natural”. These allegedly synthetic ingredients include sodium laureth sulfate, cocoamidopropyl betaine, polysorbate-20, glycerin, and potassium sorbate. The ingredients act as surfactants, emulsifiers, preservatives, and texturizers which are used throughout the chemical process.

Federal regulations define a synthetic ingredient as “a substance that is formulated or manufactured by a chemical process or by a process that chemically changes a substance extracted from naturally occurring plant, animal, or mineral sources, except that such term shall not apply to substances created by naturally occurring biological processes.”

The Wahl dog product class action lawsuit claimed that the ingredients listed above were not natural and instead could be classified as synthetic based on federal regulations. The lawsuit alleged that a reasonable consumer “would not understand — nor are they expected to understand — that these ingredients are synthetic.”

According to the plaintiff, Wahl allegedly takes advantage of this lack of understanding by promoting their ingredients as natural despite containing synthetic ingredients. The class action also alleges that Wahl takes advantage of the consumer tendency to purchase natural products for a higher price.

Wahl dog products labeled with “natural” or “100% natural” representations include:

  • Wahl Dog Shampoo – Oatmeal Formula Coconut Lime Verbena
  • Wahl Dog Shampoo – Odor Control Purifying Formula
  • Wahl Dog Shampoo – Shed Control Shed Reducing Formula
  • Wahl Dog Shampoo – Puppy Gentle Formula
  • Wahl Doggie Deodorant – Powder Scent
  • Wahl Doggie Deodorant – Eucalyptus Spearmint
  • Wahl No Rinse Waterless Dog Shampoo – Calming Formula – Lavender Chamomile
  • Wahl No Rinse Waterless Dog Shampoo – Oatmeal Formula – Coconut Lime Verbena
  • Wahl Dog Shampoo – Four in One Calming Formula

The lawsuit claims products like these are allegedly marketed and advertised as being natural, despite containing synthetic ingredients. The class action argues that consumers were damaged by purchasing these products because they did not get the higher quality, natural product they believed they were paying for.

“Wahl made its untrue and misleading statements and representations willfully, wantonly, and with reckless disregard for the truth,” the Wahl class action lawsuit argues. “As a result of Wahl’s violations of the aforementioned states’ unfair and deceptive practices laws, Plaintiff and the Class Members paid a premium for the Products.”

The proposed Class in the class action included individuals who purchased Wahl no rinse waterless dog shampoo and other Wahl products within the Class period (to be determined in court). The complaint also listed a New York class of the same consumers from New York state.

The Wahl class action lawsuit seeks compensatory damages, incidental damages, consequential damages, other monetary damages, court costs, and attorneys’ fees.

The Wahl Dog Products Class Action Lawsuit is McAllister v. Wahl Clipper Corporation, Case No. 2017L48, in the Circuit Court of the Fourteenth Judicial Circuit.
