Consumers who have purchased Wahl dog shampoo or other products from the Wahl Clipper Corporation allege the products do not contain organic or natural ingredients, despite what the product label says.
The manufacturer of Wahl dog shampoo and Doggie deodorant were hit last year with a class action lawsuit alleging these products are not “100% Natural” or “Natural,” even though the consumers purchased the products for that reason.
The class action lawsuit alleges the company deliberately used such wording on their Wahl dog shampoo and Doggie deodorant products, to entice concerned pet owners who did not want to expose their pets to unnatural products.
The class action lawsuit was filed in December 2017 by plaintiff Christina M., who reportedly purchased Wahl Dog Shampoo, Oatmeal Formula on April 25, 2017. Like numerous other consumers who purchased Wahl dog shampoo, Christina says she believed the product was “Natural” and did not contain any synthetic ingredients.
Christina states that she would not have purchased the Wahl dog shampoo if she had known there were artificial ingredients, which is the same as the other class members in the class action lawsuit.
Overview of Wahl Dog Shampoo Ingredient Problems
According to the class action lawsuit, Wahl dog shampoo and deodorant consists of several allegedly synthetic ingredients, such as:
- Sodium Laureth Sulfate
- Cocoamidopropyl Betaine
- Polysorbate-20
- Glycerin
- Potassium Sorbate
These ingredients act as surfactants, emulsifiers, preservatives and texturizers through a chemical process.
According to federal regulations, the term synthetic applies to any “substance that is formulated or manufactured by a chemical process or by a process that chemically changes a substance extracted from naturally occurring plant, animal, or mineral sources, except that such term shall not apply to substances created by naturally occurring biological processes.”
Christina argues that this definition contradicts the “100% Natural” statement on the product’s label, alleging that most consumers don’t have the technical knowledge to understand whether the ingredients are really natural or not. The products that contain the “100% Natural” or “Natural” claims include:
- Wahl Dog Shampoo – Oatmeal Formula Coconut Lime Verbena
- Wahl Dog Shampoo – Odor Control Purifying Formula
- Wahl Dog Shampoo – Shed Control Shed Reducing Formula
- Wahl Dog Shampoo – Puppy Gentle Formula
- Wahl Doggie Deodorant – Powder Scent
- Wahl Doggie Deodorant – Eucalyptus Spearmint
- Wahl No-Rinse Waterless Dog Shampoo – Calming Formula – Lavender Chamomile
- Wahl No-Rinse Waterless Dog Shampoo – Oatmeal Formula – Coconut Lime Verbena
- Wahl Dog Shampoo – Four in One Calming Formula
Consumers have become increasingly wary of products containing chemical or synthetic ingredients in food and cleaning products, and now, pet products. According to the class action lawsuit, the sales of natural products grew 6% to $117 billion in 2010 and the Wahl Clipper Corporation has been one of the companies to profit from this trend.
The Wahl Clipper Corporation does business in the United States and over 100 countries worldwide, with the website stating the company provides itself in providing quality products. Christina says this company is responsible for disclosing all relevant product information to their consumers, including the ingredients in their dog shampoos and deodorants.
Other dog products that have come under class action lawsuit investigation include Rachel Ray’s Nutrish dog food.
This Wahl Dog Shampoo Class Action Lawsuit is Case No. 2017L48, in the Circuit Court of the Fourteenth Judicial Circuit for Whiteside County, Illinois.
