Alteril sleep aid products are falsely marketed as natural even though they contain synthetic ingredients, according to a recently-filed class action lawsuit.

Plaintiff Lauren Timmerman filed the Alteril all-natural class action lawsuit Feb. 9 against Global Product Management Inc. and Dish Direct Inc.

Timmerman says she relied on the defendants’ Alteril all-natural representations and paid a premium for the sleep aids because she believed they did not contain non-natural ingredients.

The products named in the Alteril class action lawsuit include:

• Alteril All Natural Sleep Aid Tablets
• Alteril Natural Sleep Aid Tablets
• Alteril Fast Acting Softgels Natural Sleep Aid
• Alteril PM With Tumeric Natural Sleep Aid

“Consumers have become increasingly concerned about the effects of synthetic and chemical ingredients in food, cleaning products, bath and beauty products and everyday household products,” Timmerman says.

The Alteril class action lawsuit alleges that the defendants have capitalized on consumers’ growing demand for products that do not contain synthetic ingredients and charged a premium for the sleep aids.

Alteril all-natural products contain numerous synthetic ingredients, plaintiff alleges

Despite prominent labeling on the product packaging indicating the sleep aids are “natural” or “all natural,” Timmerman says they contain several synthetic ingredients including sorbitol, calcium carbonate, dicalcium phosphate, and maltodextrin.

Timmerman says that reasonable consumers understand that a product prominently labeled as “all natural” will not contain synthetic ingredients. She says the defendants understood that their deceptive representations would appeal to consumers who were seeking products that contained only natural ingredients, and that they would be likely to pay a premium for Alteril all natural products.

The Alteril class action lawsuit asserts claims for violations of New York General Business Law and breach of express warranty.

The makers of Unisom sleep aids are also facing a class action lawsuit alleging they falsely advertised their products as being made of natural ingredients.
