The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is issuing refunds to consumers after Credit Karma agreed to a $3 million lawsuit settlement to resolve the claim that it misrepresented consumers as “pre-approved” or having high approval odds for lending opportunities they were later denied.

The settlement benefits 497,425 consumers who were denied credit after responding to a Credit Karma offer that said they were “pre-approved” and/or had “90% odds” of being approved for the credit opportunity.

According to the FTC lawsuit, Credit Karma falsely represented consumers’ chances of being approved for credit opportunities to deceive them into applying. These applicants were allegedly denied due to their credit, resulting in wasted time and, in some cases, dropped credit scores.

Credit Karma is an Intuit company that allows consumers to see their credit profiles and provides credit recommendations.

Credit Karma agreed to a $3 million settlement to end the FTC’s claims, and the agency is now returning those funds to affected consumers.

Under the terms of the settlement, consumers can receive a cash payment. No payment estimates are available, but according to the FTC, payment amounts will vary depending on the number of people who file claims and other factors.

There is no exclusion or objection deadline for the settlement.

The FTC settlement was finalized on Jan. 23, 2023.

In order to receive a Credit Karma settlement payment, consumers must submit a valid claim form by March 4, 2024.

I was never informed about the lawsuit in the beginning but I have been denied numerous times and I’m glad that I finally seen it unfortunately the deadline has passed but if there’s any way you can still apply or have another cut off date because most people don’t really look at class action lawsuits until something just pops up on your screen and all of a sudden you know you’ve done that before so if there’s anyone that can possibly get in a secondary cut-out date that would be awesome.

  4. Leticia Lopez says:

  5. JosephDecorpo says:

I applied got denied and credit score dropped and never got a. Claim number or letter . I have switched emails recently to. I was told to file a claim before the 4th and was told I needed my denial letter it was few years back I never kept that . U can see they denied me (cause I can try to get approved right now and still says and does the same thing) this is Bull I was a victim too and now I won’t get nothing. They should do things differently like check up on peoples new emails if they moved etc. To try and contact us or give us more options to apply for this settlement. Now I’m screwed out of anything right ???

  6. Leola V Williams says:

I filed for a claim for nothing and they still say that you can apply for a credit card. They haven’t removed it.

  7. Stephanie Beulke says:

Completely agree with the last post. I requested a claim number and was never given or sent one. This is very disappointing since my credit was affected when i was denied for a loan or credit card through credit karma.

    1. Seirra Carter says:

Same here I never got a claim number

  8. Shawn - A Pissed Off Consumer Tired Of Getting Jerked Around says:

The FTC is anything but fair. A lot of people applied for credit cards due to CK 90% chance of approval, but never received a claim number. So the consumer loses once again. I wonder what undisclosed amount the FTC is receiving in their bank account from this settlement, and they didn’t even need a claim number. The FTC is just another bad joke we have to put up with, they claim they protect the consumer, but they don’t protect jack.
