LendingTree agreed to pay $875,000 to resolve a class action lawsuit claiming that it failed to prevent a 2022 data breach.
The settlement benefits individuals whose personal information was compromised or potentially compromised in the February 2022 LendingTree data breach.
According to the class action lawsuit, LendingTree could have prevented a February 2022 data breach by implementing reasonable cybersecurity measures. Because of LendingTree’s failures, hackers were allegedly able to gain access to consumer names, Social Security numbers, birth dates and addresses.
LendingTree is a lending service that helps borrowers find loans and rates for lending opportunities.Â
LendingTree hasn’t admitted wrongdoing but agreed to resolve the class action lawsuit with an $875,000 settlement.
Under the terms of the settlement, class members can receive either three years of free credit-monitoring services and expense reimbursement or a cash payment.
The credit-monitoring services include three years of Equifax monitoring through Pango. This subscription includes daily one-bureau credit monitoring, identity restoration services and up to $1 million in identity theft insurance. Class members who choose this option can also claim up to $10,000 in expense reimbursement as long as they can show documentation of out-of-pocket losses tied to the data breach. The data breach reimbursement includes up to 10 hours of lost time at $25 per hour, for a maximum lost-time payment of $250.Â
Class members who do not wish to receive credit monitoring and do not have documented expenses to claim could instead choose to receive an alternate cash payment. These payments are estimated to be around $100, but could be higher or lower depending on the number of valid claims filed and the funds available for pro rata payments.
The deadline for exclusion and objection was Dec. 26, 2023.
The final approval hearing for the settlement is scheduled for Jan. 25, 2024.
In order to receive settlement benefits, class members must submit a valid claim form by Jan. 23, 2024.
