citibank call recording settlement

Citibank NA agreed to pay $1.55 million to settle a class action lawsuit stemming over allegations that the banking giant listened-in on customer phone calls made to its toll-free line, without informing callers that they were being recorded.

Plaintiff Ramona Edery filed the Citibank lawsuit after making a call to the toll-free number in order to open an account. She claims to have discussed private financial information during that phone call and only later discovered that the conversation had been recorded.

Edery alleged Citibank violated California’s Invasion of Privacy Act and referred to a state Supreme Court ruling that found customers are used to being told about any recording or monitoring at the beginning of a phone call so she had a reasonable expectation that the information she shared was not being recorded.

Those who wish to object or opt-out of the class action settlement must do so by July 28, 2016.

Who’s Eligible

Class Members include all California residents who participated in one or more phone conversations with Citibank at 800-745-1534 and were recorded or monitored without being informed between Apr. 3, 2013 and May 15, 2013.

Potential Award

$350 – $2,500

The Citibank Settlement Fund of $1.55 million will be divided among Class Members who file valid and timely Claim Forms after court expenses are paid off. The Settlement Administrator estimates that this will give each Class Member between $350 and $2,500, depending on the number of claims.

  1. Sonia says:

Dear topclassactions, class members are NOT “all individuals who participated in one or more conversations…” but rather, according to page 4 (four) of the Settlement Agreement and/or page 3 (three) of the Notice, the Settlement Class is limited to California residents.

I requested help with City Bank for financial hardship they declined. The bank sent me a refinance letter because I was such a good customer. I have very little time to pay my mortgage I would never recommend City Bank to my worst enemy.
