The Citibank settlement resolves allegations that the financial giant violated California’s Invasion of Privacy Act by listening in on phone calls made to its toll-free number without disclosing this information to customers.

Plaintiff Ramona Edery filed the class action lawsuit after allegedly calling Citibank’s toll-free line and discussing private financial information during the conversation without being told ahead of time that the call was being recorded.

Citibank denied the allegations but agreed to pay $1.5 million to settle the class action and avoid the cost of further litigation.

Class Members included all California residents who participated in one or more phone conversations with Citibank at 800-745-1534 and were recorded or monitored without being informed between Apr. 3, 2013 and May 15, 2013.
