COVID-19 lawsuits overview:

  • Who: Consumers filed lawsuits concerning COVID-19 this month against Disney, ESPN, Twentieth Century Fox and Aria Resort & Casino.
  • Why: The lawsuits involve claims related to the COVID-19 vaccine mandate and the death of an employee who died from COVID-19 while working on the set of a television series.
  • Where: COVID-19 lawsuits have been filed nationwide.

Consumers filed numerous lawsuits against companies, governments and other entities during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, with complaints revolving around restrictions, vaccines and closures, among other things.

Even now, as COVID-19 mandates and restrictions lessen or become obsolete, consumers continue to file lawsuits related to the virus.

Just this month, plaintiffs filed suits concerning the denial of vaccine mandate exemptions — leading to job terminations — and a worker who died from COVID-19 while working on the set of a television show.

ESPN accused of illegally firing employees who requested religious exemption from vaccine mandate

Two former ESPN employees filed a lawsuit against ESPN and its majority owner Disney, arguing the companies illegally fired them after they refused to get the COVID-19 vaccine.

The former employees claim the companies denied their requests for religious exemption to the COVID-19 vaccine mandate in what they argue was a violation of federal disability law, Title VII and Connecticut state laws.

They also allege ESPN and Disney are guilty of religious discrimination and workplace retaliation.

Fox, Disney allegedly fail to enforce health, safety protocols on TV set prior to worker’s COVID-19 death

Disney was involved in a separate lawsuit filed this month against the company and Twentieth Century Fox by the widow of a man who died from COVID-19 while working on the set of the “American Horror Story” television show.

The widow claims Disney and Fox failed to follow health and safety protocols that she argues would have prevented her husband from contracting COVID-19 while working on the set of the FX television series.

“As a direct and proximate result of defendants’ negligence, gross negligence and/or recklessness, decedent contracted COVID-19 while working on the project and endured conscious pain and suffering until his death on April 18, 2021,” the Fox lawsuit. states

Aria Resort & Casino worker claims company discriminated against him

Also this month, a former employee filed a lawsuit against Aria Resort & Casino, arguing the company discriminated against him by denying his COVID-19 vaccine religious exemption request before ultimately firing him.

The nearly 10-year employee claims he had sought a religious exemption from taking the COVID-19 vaccine due to his belief it contained aborted fetal cells, which he argued went against his Christian beliefs.

“Due to his sincerely held religious beliefs, Mr. Backes did not get vaccinated and was subsequently terminated based on the same,” the COVID-19 lawsuit states.

Harvard settles claims it breached contract with students by moving in-person classes online

Harvard settled a class action lawsuit this month, agreeing to a settlement that ended claims it breached its contract with students by moving classes online during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Students argued Harvard owed them a full tuition refund for the 2020 school year, after the university transitioned in-person classes to remote online learning in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The federal judge overseeing the complaint had previously dismissed the case before later reopening it. Details of the settlement between Harvard and the student class were not immediately available.

Insight Global settles claims revolving around data breach

Also this month, Insight Global agreed to a settlement to end claims that private COVID-19 tracing information may have become available to the public following a data breach.

The settlement was made to benefit individuals who may have had their personal information compromised in the data breach and received notice of the event around the period of April 29 of last year.

Insight Global announced last April that COVID-19 tracing information it kept may have become available to the public for a short time period despite it only supposed to be viewable by authorized employees and health care professionals.

City Of Oakland, Ca let go of almost 200 of their employees for refusing to get the fatal jab, denying them any and all rights on exemptions, medical, religious, etc. Their human resources, union, supervisors were discriminating, harrassing & threatening the employees & firing them without notice, keeping many of their personal items and not returning them. That city and county should be harshly reprimanded for their corrupt behavior and employees should be given a huge class action suit against those in charge, personally suing them as well.

My husband worked government housing and made a complaint about safety issues during COVID. He was given a bar of soap, can of Lysol and a roll of paper towels for his PPE to enter apartments to make repairs. He was told HUD had called his supervisor and they wanted them to conduct precautions and his employer told him and the other maintenance worker they would alternate work schedules to have one working for a week and the other one off for a week and housing would continue to pay them while they were off. my husband worked the first week and then the next week he was off work. When he came back to work the next week he was told he would have to use his vacation time to get paid for the week he was off. He was also told they were doing emergency work orders only but he was doing all work orders. He entered apartments where people were sick work on a minor work order and then go to another apartment to work on another minor issue. He was in and out of apartments all day without wearing proper PPE. When he complained to a board member that board member reported it to HUD/OIG and that turned into a supposed investigation that ended up forcing my husband to resign due to retaliation. He was told prior to the investigation by the Special Agent from OIG that if the fired him, retaliated against him or forced him to resign he could file a whistleblower case. He filed the whistleblower case and after a long stressful investigation he was told he didn’t qualify. He was unable to find a lawyer to help him. He filed for unemployment and after a couple months of interviews and statements he started receiving unemployment. After 5 months of getting unemployment he received a letter for a hearing for unemployment because his employer was denying him unemployment. After the hearing the judge decided my husband had to pay the unemployment back because he should have reported the issues to OIG. Because we didn’t have evidence to submit there was an ongoing investigation with HUD/OIG we had to pay $8000 back to ILLINOIS UNEMPLOYMENT! He was harassed, retaliated against, deformation of character, and his employer submitted false documents claiming failed accusations against my husband and the accusations could easily be proven false by getting statements from the tenants names that were listed on a document that supposedly had complaints on my husband but these are not true as we have spoken to several of the tenants that were listed and they were extremely upset that they were listed on the document. One of the tenants even went to the office asking to see the document that their name was listed on and they told her there was no such list and it was not any of her concern. This is all false claims and they submitted this to the judge for the unemployment hearing. He was treated unfairly and the crooked employer ended up winning everything because of lies.
