Gannon University agreed to pay $1.1 million to resolve claims it overcharged students for tuition during the COVID-19 pandemic closures.

The settlement benefits Gannon University students who were enrolled after March 16, 2020, and who were assessed tuition and/or fees for the spring 2020 semester for classes not intended to be solely online.

Gannon University students in the class action lawsuit claim they were overcharged for spring 2020 tuition and fees after classes were moved online due to the global pandemic. According to the class action lawsuit, students did not get the full value of their tuition and fees due to the online classes.

Gannon University is a private, Catholic university in Pennsylvania.

Gannon hasn’t admitted wrongdoing but agreed to a $1.1 million settlement to resolve the tuition class action lawsuit.

Under the terms of the settlement, class members can receive a proportional share of the net settlement fund based on the ratio of the total amount of spring 2020 tuition and fees assessed to potential class members enrolled at Gannon during the spring 2020 semester to the total amount of spring 2020 tuition and fees assessed to each individual potential class member enrolled at Gannon that semester, less financial aid, unpaid balances related to the spring 2020 term as reflected on the class member’s account with Gannon, and any refunds already distributed related to that semester. No payment estimates are available at this time.

The deadline for exclusion and objection is May 8, 2024.

The final approval hearing for the settlement is scheduled for June 21, 2024.

No claim form is required to benefit from the settlement. Class members can submit an information form to provide an updated address, elect to receive an electronic payment or elect to have their settlement payment applied to their student account.
