Attorneys general FCC robocall letter overview:
- Who: The National Association of Attorneys General wrote a letter to the Federal Communications Commission on behalf of 41 state attorneys general.
- Why: The attorneys general have pledged to work together with the FCC to help combat robocalls.
- Where: The states and the FCC want to work together to protect consumers from robocalls nationwide.
The attorneys general from a number of states have promised the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) they will work with the agency to crack down on robocalls.
In a letter written by the National Association of Attorneys General to the FCC on behalf of 41 state attorneys general, the agency was commended for its work on attempting to reduce robocalls placed to customers.
The letter highlighted the FCC’s efforts to work with states to create information-sharing agreements used to “facilitate fast, effective information-sharing during the course of robocall investigations.”
The attorneys general assured the FCC that, while not all of the states represented in the letter have entered an agreement with the agency, they soon would.
“We believe these information sharing agreements represent an important continuation of the progress made to date in (combatting) robocalls,” the letter said. “The opportunity to enter these agreements honors our country’s tradition of federalism and evidences a mutual commitment to working towards addressing complex issues collaboratively.”
Attorneys general urge FCC to reach out to states that have not made agreements on robocalls yet
The attorneys general urged the FCC to reach out directly to any states that have yet to enter into information-sharing agreements with it.
Thus far, the FCC has reached a “memora of understanding” with 36 states that have agreed to work with the agency on combating robocalls, Law360 reported.
Some states have already begun working on their own to crack down on robocalls and fraud, however the FCC has reportedly implored states to work with them to more effectively protect consumers.
States that partner with the FCC are able to acquire access to robocall blocking companies connected to the government, in addition to federal subpoenas and otherwise confidential information, Law360 reported.
In April, TracFone Wireless agreed to pay $13.4 million to resolve claims from the FCC that it allowed ineligible customers to sign up for a federal program for low-income individuals in order to increase its commissions.

8 thoughts onState AGs to work with FCC on combating robocalls
As soon as I turned 62 years of age, I was bombarded with unwanted solicitations calls and scammer calls.
When the time of year comes to select a Medicare supplement policy, my phone is ringing every half hour with so called insurance specialist wanting to help me select a plan.
Then there are the robo calls for auto warranty extension solicitors. Add the IRS scammers to the list plus the scammers who want you to send bail money to get a grandchild out of jail.
I bought an IPhone and pay $2.99 monthly for an app to report these these fraudulent calls and solicitors and block the phone numbers. The app keeps a list of the phone numbers and names of these predators. The IPhone let’s me block each call and identifies the name their cell phone was registered under.
The app, after two years of subscription, currently has 536 numbers blocked.
Oh but the solicitors/scammers are getting smarter. Now they are sending me text messages.
If you have a land line/home phone through a television cable company it’s three times worse. They sell your phone number to third parties (it’s in the fine print of the contract you agreed to when you subscribed).
These calls are out of control!
This is happening to billions of seniors!
I received a call for Medicare each day three times in a row about three times a day a total of about nine calls a day all robocalls and I can’t even get Medicare I tell them
They call me and harass me alll day cussing me out telling me nasty things how can they get by with this even call for week on end everyday telling me to f-@ff and that I’m going to jail!
We get those horrible calls all the time like car warranty, etc. So disruptive and annoying.
Calls and text received
I live in Florida and I get unwanted robocalls multiple times DAILY. It is so bad some days that they’ll call I end it they call right back with a similar number, an hour later the same thing and this goes on all day sometimes. It’s extremely frustrating, makes me want to throw my phone out.
