
The Federal Trade Commission sent refunds in October as part of 10 settlements with companies such as Pyrex, Amazon, HomeAdvisor and Office Depot.
Pyrex FTC refunds
The FTC sent more than $88,000 in refunds to consumers who purchased Pyrex glass products mislabeled as made in the United States.
According to the FTC lawsuit, Pyrex falsely advertised its glass measuring cups on Amazon as made in the United States. In reality, it allegedly made and imported some of the products from China.
Instant Brands agreed to a settlement to resolve the FTC’s claims. With these funds, the FTC returned 10,259 payments totalling more than $88,000 to consumers who purchased the misadvertised products.

LasikPlus FTC settlement payments
The FTC sent more than $1.1 million in payments to compensate individuals quoted a far higher price than expected at LasikPlus consultations due to deceptive marketing.
The FTC claimed LasikPlus and Joffe MediCenter used deceptive ads that promised consumers they could get Lasik surgery for less than $300 per eye. In reality, once they scheduled consultations, LasikPlus allegedly quoted consumers far more than expected.
The defendants agreed to pay a settlement to resolve the FTC claims. This settlement funded 12,077 payments worth more than $1.1 million to consumers who reportedly wasted their time with Lasik consultations.

Amazon Flex drivers FTC refunds
In a second round of payments, the FTC returned withheld tips to Amazon Flex drivers who worked for the retailer between 2016 and 2019.
The FTC lawsuit claimed Amazon wrongfully withheld tips from Amazon Flex drivers in violation of the law.
Amazon agreed to a settlement in 2021 to resolve these claims. The FTC sent the first round of payments totalling more than $58.3 million in November 2021. In October 2024, the FTC resent 3,244 Zelle payments to eligible drivers who did not cash their original payment check.
Drivers who receive a Zelle payment will have their money automatically deposited into their bank accounts with a note regarding the settlement.

American Vehicle Protection FTC refunds
The FTC returned more than $449,000 to consumers who purchased American Vehicle Protection extended auto warranties based on false claims.
According to the FTC lawsuit, American Vehicle Protection made illegal sales calls while attempting to sell expensive extended auto warranties to consumers. During these calls, American Vehicle Protection allegedly pretended to represent car manufacturers and dealers to trick consumers into purchasing warranties.
American Vehicle Protection agreed to a settlement to resolve the FTC’s allegations. Using these funds, the FTC sent 18,255 payments totaling more than $449,000 to consumers who purchased the AVP extended warranties.

HomeAdvisor FTC refunds
The FTC sent more than $1.1 million in refunds to consumers allegedly tricked into paying for HomeAdvisor’s mHelpDesk service.
HomeAdvisor allegedly promised members one free month of mHelpDesk but, in reality, charged them $59.99 each month for the optional service. The FTC claims the company also misled users about the sources and quality of its potential customer leads.
HomeAdvisor agreed to a settlement to resolve the FTC lawsuit. In November 2023, the FTC sent nearly $1.8 million in a first round of refunds to consumers misled by HomeAdvisor’s false advertising regarding customer leads. This October, the FTC sent a second round of 18,848 payments totalling more than $1.1 million to consumers who paid for mHelpDesk.

Office Depot FTC refunds
The FTC sent a third round of refunds to consumers who paid for computer repair services from Office Depot and its software supplier Support.com.
According to the FTC, Office Depot configured a virus-scanning program that falsely reported malware or viruses even when the scanned device was not infected. The retailer allegedly used these false scan results to trick consumers into purchasing computer repair services.
Office Depot agreed to a settlement to resolve the FTC lawsuit. The FTC distributed the first round of refunds in February 2020 and the second in August 2022, returning more than $33.4 million to consumers in these two rounds. With remaining settlement funds, the FTC sent 8,005 checks totalling more than $353,000 to consumers who paid Office Depot over $500 and cashed their second check.

Rhinelander Auto Center FTC refunds
The FTC returned more than $1 million in refunds to consumers harmed by Rhinelander Auto’s fees and discriminatory practices.
Rhinelander Auto allegedly added hidden fees to its car prices to secretly charge consumers for gap insurance, service plans and other products consumers did not want. According to the FTC and Wisconsin, the auto dealer also discriminated against American Indian customers by charging them more than other customers.
Rhinelander Auto agreed to a settlement to resolve the allegations. The FTC used these funds to send 7,531 checks to consumers totalling over $1 million.

Credit Karma FTC refunds
The FTC sent more than $2.5 million to thousands of consumers allegedly harmed by Credit Karma’s bogus “pre-approved” offers.
According to the FTC, Credit Karma provided consumers with “pre-approved” credit offers that were denied once they applied. These denials allegedly caused wasted time and credit consequences.
Credit Karma agreed to a settlement to resolve the FTC lawsuit. The FTC used the settlement funds to send 50,994 payments to consumers who requested compensation. In total, the FTC returned more than $2.5 million to these consumers.

MOBE FTC refunds
The FTC sent a third round of payments to consumers who lost money to a business coaching scheme from My Online Business Education.
My Online Business Education allegedly told consumers that its business coaching program could help them start their own online business and earn a substantial income. According to the FTC, this “proven system” actually involved selling memberships to others to earn a commission.
My Online Business Education agreed to a settlement to resolve the FTC lawsuit. The FTC sent two rounds of payments, one in April 2022 and one in July 2023, totalling more than $23.4 million. With remaining funds, the FTC sent a third round of 6,083 payments worth more than $456,000 to consumers who paid MOBE more than $3,769 and who accepted their second refund payment.
