Woman at computer thinkingThe permanent birth control device Essure came with a lot of promises, and for a while it was the only non-surgical form of permanent sterilization for women. However, after many of these devices were implanted in women all over the country, complaints and serious medical problems began to emerge.

This has led many women to wonder whether or not Essure can be reversed.

Essure removal is possible. A woman who is thinking about whether or not Essure can be reversed should consult carefully with her physician about whether or not this procedure is recommended.

Women who started having problems with their implant can consult their doctor to figure out what to do next. It’s natural that plenty of these women are thinking about whether or not they can even take the device out.

According to the North Carolina Center for Reproductive Medicine, many medical facilities now claim that they can offer a safe solution for those women who suffer from complications related to Essure. From colon perforation to abdominal pain to severe headaches, medical teams are gaining experience around the country in Essure reversal.

What is Essure?

The only permanent birth control solution for women that doesn’t require a skin incision was marketed by Bayer under the name Essure. Essure implantation was more cost effective than tubal ligation and was an in-office procedure.

The Essure device was made up of three different components: an outer nickel-titanium outer alloy coil, a flexible stainless steel inner coil, and an inner plastic fiber. Over the course of a three-month period after implantation, the tissue formed around the coil that created a barrier.

Complaints from Essure Complications

The FDA began collecting adverse event reports from women who received the Essure permanent birth control device shortly after it went on the market. One study conducted by the FDA between 2002 and 2013, noted that women experienced a broad range of side effects, such as depression, menstrual irregularities, headaches, weight gain, and extreme fatigue.

Other cases noted problems with breakage or malfunction of the device. Many of the women who received this landmark device claim that they were not told about the possibility of significant side effects and that the manufacturer of the device should be held accountable.

What Procedures Are Available for Reversal of Essure?

Typically, removal of the Essure device is performed laparoscopically by taking both fallopian tubes out of the female in addition to the interstitial portion of the Essure micro insert.

According to Contemporary OB/GYN, many women might also elect to undergo a hysterectomy or a cornual wedge resection to ensure that any remaining fragments of the device have been effectively excised.

Plenty of women who have had problems with the device have already taken action not just by filing adverse event reports with the FDA, but in lodging lawsuits against the manufacturer, Bayer. Bayer is accused of knowing about the side effects and dangerous problems that could occur following implantation, but failing to notify women about the likelihood that this could occur, or about what to do if they notice the symptoms of Essure problems.

In general, Essure lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
