AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon data privacy overview:

  • Who: The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) asked the top U.S. mobile carriers to share details about their geolocation data privacy practices.
  • Why: The agency says it is taking steps to ensure that customers’ sensitive data is protected.
  • Where: The FCC rules apply to mobile carriers within the United States.

The top mobile carriers in the country have shared details about their data privacy practices with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), Law360 reports.

In July, the FCC asked the major mobile carriers to provide information about how they protect sensitive consumer information such as geolocation data by Aug. 3.

In response, AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon submitted information about their data privacy practices, including how they collect, utilize and share geolocation data.

AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile data privacy protections comply with FCC rules, mobile carriers say

The mobile carriers claim that their data protection practices comply with the FCC’s requirements.

The AT&T data privacy comments state that it collects geolocation data to provide better service to its customers. The mobile carrier insists that it “applies robust protections” to customer data, including geolocation data.

T-Mobile says it uses a “holistic approach” when protecting T-Mobile data privacy. The mobile carrier reportedly uses several safeguards to protect data, including requiring staff training and conducting impact assessments, according to its FCC submission.

The Verizon data privacy letter reassures the FCC that it limits its collection of geolocation data such that it only collects data to improve its services. Verizon insists that it is transparent with customers about how it uses their data.

FCC to investigate Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T data privacy practices

FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel says she has asked the agency’s Enforcement Bureau to investigate whether the mobile carriers are complying with FCC regulations requiring them to disclose how they use geolocation data.

“This information and geolocation data is really sensitive,” Rosenworcel says in a statement. “That’s why the FCC is taking steps to ensure this data is protected.”

Customers with privacy complaints or concerns about how mobile carriers use their data may file complaints directly with the FCC, according to the agency.

Earlier this summer, the FCC adopted new guidance for wireless carriers to help ensure customers could access services during climate disasters such as hurricanes and wildfires.

Additionally, T-Mobile and Verizon have recently been hit with class action lawsuits over issues related to billing, service and accessibility.

What do you do about total wireless prepaid back few years ago when they got accounts and cloud storage like Google drive accounts and deleted people’s storage like pictures and everything you had saved, then called you about how you were due for upgrade and I did the lawsuit form and I know people personally got checks from it but I never seen one and when I told the rep on the phone what they had done she said I did it and I had screen password lock and had it in my pocket she said I did it like I pocket entered my unlock pin and opens up Google drive and erased everything and reset my phone and then they stoped offering a upgrade btw is why she said it happened is I was due for a upgrade, and hung up only saying it was all my fault . I seen were a lot of people got settlement about it cause there stuff personal stuff was given to other parties sold to them I think but I filed out for the lawsuit and I never seen or got anyone to contact me about it and it was alot of stuff in my Google drive passwords, photos screenshots of account and password to remember photos I had for years and it was taken just in like mins . I looked at it at work and clocked out , 10 or less mins down the road it’s all gone . I called prepaid total wireless rep she said it cause I was due for upgrade and I told her what they did and it was nothing but how I did it from then on out . Please let me know what to do cause I had family get settlement checks and they told me how much and I know now your service provider and customer service reps does not have to have a warrant to get onto people’s phones and get whatever they want and veiw whatever you got in any account or cloud storage. Cause they logged into my Google account to delete all I had in my drive storage , all of it so I need to know why it was taken care of for some but some didn’t get anything not even explanation why

I have been a Verizon customer for years. Their service has gone down considerably. Dropped calls in my house though I live within a one-mile radius of a tower. Frustrating to get on y 2 bars of service at my home office. Data Breach was not good. Please sign me up for any notices to participate.

  9. Heidi Marie Cooksey says:

ATT has charged me for services that were not requested nor was I aware. The monthly cell bill was usually different each month. The many calls, the lengthy waits, the phony explaination given and the sudden drop call while talking became a norm for me. Lastly, the most illegitimate process of payment on a prerecorded line cheated me from a lower monthly bill. I called to make a $500 payment to only one of my devices. The services rep promised it would apply only to that cell phone. A month later, my $500 payment went towards the amount of my total ATT Balance for devices. Called and received the same stories, waited hours, and no corrections. I never know what payment to expect each month. It varies between $10-$30 and no one can explain.

  10. OM says:

Please add me. I’ve had T-mobile for 17 years & ATT for 6 yrs.
