A class action lawsuit was filed against South Carolina hospital system Roper St. Francis Healthcare over patient data exposed following the 2020 Blackbaud breach.
The lead plaintiffs seek to represent patients who allegedly had their personal information exposed when hackers compromised Roper St. Francis’s system in October of 2020. The lawsuit points to a series of other data breaches as well, arguing that the health care company should have been prepared for such cyberattacks.
“At all relevant times, Roper knew the data it stored was vulnerable to cyberattack based upon these repeated and ongoing data breaches,” states the class action lawsuit. “Specifically, Roper St. Francis had three previous hacking incidents before the one complained of herein: (a) The first reported on January 29, 2019 that effected 35,253 people; (b) The second reported on September 3, 2020 that affected 6,000 people; and (c) The third reported on September 8, 2020 that effected 92,963 people.”
Indeed, the October cyberattack came after two September incidents, cited above, that involved the infamous Blackbaud data breach. Blackbaud is one of Roper St. Francis’s vendors. When Blackbaud’s system was breached, Roper patient data was exposed in the September breaches noted by the class action lawsuit – affecting nearly 100,000 people.
The plaintiffs contend that Roper St. Francis has had ample time and opportunity to secure the sensitive and valuable information it collects from patients. They accuse the healthcare system of negligently exposing that information to hackers and other criminals and putting patients at risk of identity theft and fraud.
“We merely seek to hold Roper accountable for its continued negligent actions in allowing these preventable data breaches from happening and to compensate current and former patients for the harm inflicted,” an attorney representing the plaintiffs told a local NBC news source. “We seek to provide all patients whose private data was compromised credit monitoring services as partial compensation for the harm each has suffered, not just the hand full that Roper thinks are the worst cases.”
Roper St. Francis has not yet responded to the class action lawsuit, according to NBC News 2.
The plaintiffs are seeking damages, along with a court order that would protect Class Members from future data breaches at Roper St. Francis.

Contacted by PJ&A about a data breach through their Esemble company. I tried to call the number for information on what they got from my information because my bank and credit cards were hacked following this happening and I wasn’t told in letter until months later. The number has been disconnected and PJ&A said Ensemble stopped all communications.
I also received a letter in the mail.. around the end of last year. Wondering who I contact as well
