Onglyza side effects heart failureAfter a growing number of patients have reportedly suffered severe Onglyza side effects, an Onglyza FDA warning was released noting the risk of heart failure on top of a few of other serious complications.

Background of Onglyza

The type-2 diabetes drug Onglyza (which is also known by its generic name, saxagliptin) is jointly manufactured by the pharmaceutical giants AstraZeneca and Bristol-Myers Squibb. It’s a relatively new drug— the U.S. Food and Drug Administration only approved Onglyza as a type-2 diabetes treatment in 2009.

Onglyza works to treat type-2 diabetes by helping to control a patient’s blood sugar level. Since its release less than a decade ago, Onglyza has become an increasingly popular option.

By 2012, just three years after its FDA approval, Onglyza was bringing in $709 million a year, and sales have since continued to climb. Some estimates project that within a few years, annual sales of Onglyza will hit $2 billion.

Onglyza is designed for patients with type-2 diabetes, and is one of a group of drugs known as incretin mimetics. Incretin mimetic medication work by mimicking the body’s natural incretin hormones and simulating the release of insulin.

Many patients appreciate that Onglyza, unlike other diabetes drugs like it, does not encourage weight gain in patients.

Side Effects of Onglyza

Of course, it is normal for any medication to come with certain mild side effects, which in most cases will go away on their own without further treatment. Onglyza is no exception, and is linked with common side effects like upper respiratory tract infection, urinary tract infection and headaches.

Unfortunately, Onglyza has also been linked with several serious side effects, including pancreatic cancer, heart failure and other side effects.

However, Onglyza’s warning label did not originally denote the risk of heart failure associated with the drug. An Onglyza FDA warning was added in February 2014 to inform patients about the serious risk of heart failure linked with the diabetes drug.

Patients have also reportedly suffered from pancreatic cancer and thyroid cancer as a result of Onglyza.

Filing an Onglyza Lawsuit

Hundreds of patients who have suffered from various Onglyza complications or side effects of similar drugs have begun filing lawsuits against the manufacturers of these drugs for failing to adequately warn the public and the medical community about Onglyza dangers.

According to Onglyza lawsuits, AstraZeneca and Bristol-Myers Squbb, the drugs’ manufacturers, either knew or should have known about Onglyza heart failure.

If you or someone you love has suffered from Onglyza dangers like heart failure, pancreatitis, pancreatic cancer, or other serious side effects after using Onglyza, you may be able to take legal action.

Patients who have suffered from heart failure while using Onglyza before receiving the Onglyza FDA warning about this life-threatening side effect may be able to file an Onglyza lawsuit.

Filing an Onglyza lawsuit may not fix the damage caused by this drug, or bring a loved one back to life, but it can help to alleviate medical expenses often incurred by these problems.

In general, Onglyza lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
