Johnson & Johnson was recently ordered to pay millions to compensate patients involved in a series of Risperdal lawsuit trials.
While some Risperdal trials have reached their conclusion ending in compensation money from Johnson & Johnson, other Risperdal trials are still waiting for their jury verdicts.
These Risperdal lawsuits are filed against Janssen Pharmaceuticals, which is a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson. Janssen, the manufacturer of Risperdal, has been facing an ongoing series of lawsuits in the last several years.
One of these Risperdal lawsuits concluded in a multimillion-dollar verdict awarded to the family of a young man who allegedly developed severe gynecomastia complications due to using Risperdal.
A Philadelphia jury awarded $2.5 million to the young man involved in the Risperdal lawsuit, deciding that Janssen was liable for the physical and emotional suffering that the boy underwent due to his gynecomastia complications.
As the lawsuit claimed, the jury determined that Janssen failed to adequately warn consumers and the medical community about the potential gynecomastia risk associated with the medication.
The plaintiff is now 21 years old, but began to take Risperdal when he was 8 years old in order to treat possible autism. However, in the intermittent years, the boy developed size 46DD breasts, allegedly because of gynecomastia due to Risperdal.
What is Risperdal?
Risperdal (generic name risperidone) is an antipsychotic drug approved to treat a variety of mental and mood disorders. Risperdal is approved to treat schizophrenia, bipolar mania, autism, and other conditions. Ri
sperdal works to restore the balance of natural substances in the brain that can become unbalanced when a patient suffers from a disorder.
However, Risperdal has been linked with a number of side effects that lawsuits allege were not adequately described to patients and the medical community.
Risperdal side effects include diabetes and movement disorders, as well as gynecomastia complications, or the development of male breasts.
Risperdal Side Effects: Gynecomastia
In some cases, like the plaintiff in this lawsuit, boys who suffer from gynecomastia problems develop unusually large male breasts that make daily life more complicated.
Gynecomastia symptoms are not a serious physical danger to patients who suffer from it, but the symptoms can still be extremely traumatic for boys and young men with gynecomastia.
Unfortunately, treatment for gynecomastia is not always simple. For fortunate patients, gynecomastia symptoms go away naturally over time.
However, these symptoms do not retreat for years. In these cases, treatment may be required to remove the excess breast tissue.
Many boys who suffer from severe gynecomastia find the symptoms to be such a problematic issue in their lives that they choose to undergo this surgical procedure.
Risperdal Lawsuits
In a series of lawsuits filed against Janssen Pharmaceuticals, hundreds of boys and young men allege that they have suffered from gynecomastia due to using Risperdal.
These plaintiffs claim that Janssen was aware of the risks associated with their antipsychotic, but failed to adequately warn consumers and the medical community about these potential side effects.
