Louisiana Woman Sues for Vaginal Mesh Defect
By Jessica Tyner

The number of people filing vaginal mesh lawsuits is growing each month — so much so that the lawsuits have been consolidated into multidistrict litigation (MDL). Gloria Sanders of Louisiana is one of the latest vaginal mesh victims to file a complaint. Her vaginal mesh lawsuit is against C.R. Bard Inc., Tissue Science Laboratories Limited (TSL) and Boston Scientific Corporation. Vaginal mesh, vaginal slings, bladder slings, and transvaginal mesh implants all qualify for the growing vaginal mesh MDL.
Sanders received the Pelvicol Acellular Collagen Matrix and the Boston Scientific Corporation Twist on Aug. 26, 2002. Devices like these are designed to treat incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse (POP). However, vaginal mesh victims like Sanders claim that they weren’t given adequate warning about potential hazards.
There are some women who don’t realize their vaginal mesh is causing permanent damage until it’s too late. While some women experience severe pain and suffering from the device, others don’t experience any pain at all, which can be more dangerous. If these women don’t regularly have their devices checked by a medical professional, and the devices can be kept in for years without regular checkups, they may suffer permanent interior damage without realizing anything is amiss.Â
MDL Alleges Vaginal Mesh Warnings Were Inadequate
Like many other women, Sanders wants to know why these devices are still on the market, or at least why there haven’t been changes to the warnings. Patients depend on their doctors to make the best choices for them — but doctors often rely on the warnings provided by the makers of medical devices. While there are often independent studies available, few people have the time to pore over numerous medical journals to double check everything. Sanders says the manufacturers need to be held accountable.
The C.R. Bard Vaginal Mesh MDL is In re: C.R. Bard Inc. Pelvic Repair Systems Products Liability Litigation, MDL No. 2187, in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of West Virginia.
