Georgia Couple Sues Stryker Over Hip Implant Complications
By Robert J. Boumis
Mary and William Butts of Georgia have sued Stryker Corp. over alleged complications from Mary’s Stryker-manufactured hip implant. The hip implant lawsuit was filed on Sept. 16 of this year.
In June 2009, Mary Butts underwent surgery to receive an artificial hip implant manufactured by Stryker. More specifically, surgeons implanted the Gamma 3 Hip Prosthesis, a metal-on-metal hip joint, in Mary. According to the lawsuit, the hip implant turned out to be defective, leaving Mary Butts suffering from scarring, pain and suffering, and other physical and emotional damage.
Metal-on-metal hip implants have been implicated in a number of serious complications, including hip implant failure, metal ion poisoning and pseudotumor formation – the growth of tumor-like growths in the tissue surrounding the implant.
The Butts’ hip implant lawsuit seeks damages related to medical costs, compensation for pain and suffering, loss of income potential and loss of consortium. The hip implant lawsuit also seeks the reimbursement of attorney fees and other costs of the suit. The Butts have requested a trial by jury.
The Stryker hip implant lawsuit is Mary Butts and William Butts v. Stryker Corporation, Case No. 1:13-cv-00169-JRH-BKE, in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Georgia.
