FDA Warns of Tainted ‘Herbal’ Sexual Enhancement Supplements

By Robert J. Boumis

According to the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA), there is an “emerging trend” where allegedly herbal products contain hidden active ingredients. Many of these products are promoted for male and female sexual enhancement.

Per a 2013 public notice by the FDA, the agency has received more and more evidence that many “herbal” and “natural” sexual enhancement supplements actually contain prescription drugs, other controlled substances, and harmful chemicals. Prescription drugs can be lethal if used incorrectly. The FDA’s website does not mince words when it says, “these deceptive products can harm you!”

The FDA reports that adulterated sexual enhancement supplements are becoming more and more common. Other follow-up notices elaborate on concerns, and what exactly the FDA has found in specific “herbal” sexual enhancement pills.

Tainted Sexual Enhancement Supplements a Real Problem

The FDA has dozens of public safety notices for a huge variety of sexual enhancement supplements. These notices are up to inform the public that various supplements have tested positive for controlled substances and other adulterations.

For example, some websites and other retailers sell “Clalis” (not to be confused with Cialis, a real drug for erectile dysfunction) which actually contains the active ingredient of Viagra. However, this drug can interact with certain heart medications and kill a patient. Since people with erectile dysfunction are more prone to heart problems, this is a concerning connection.

Clalis is far from the only over-the-counter sexual enhancement supplement that’s hit the FDA’s radar. One sold under the name “Exten 1300” was found to contain a veritable prescription cocktail of Viagra and Cialis, both of which require a physician’s prescription and can be lethal when mixed with the wrong drug or health problems. Others, including Cobra Sexual Energy, Silver Sword, Royal Dragon Herbal Tonic Balls, and Super Cheetah carry many of the same risks and similar additives.

Herbal Sexual Supplement Class Action Lawsuit Investigation

A class action lawsuit investigation has been launched against the manufacturers of these so-call “natural” herbal sexual enhancement pills. Attorneys allege that the products are fraudulent in that they make false claims not supported by clinical evidence. Such a class action lawsuit could also allege that the additives and unsupervised use of prescription drugs could threaten, injure or even kill people who took them. Joining this class action lawsuit could help consumers seek damages for medical wages, lost wages during recovery, legal fees or even wrongful death.

It can be embarrassing to admit that you were taken in by a fraudulent supplement for sexual enhancement. But no matter what, you need to remember that you have rights. If you or someone you care about took an herbal supplement and either found that it failed to live up to its claims or suffered serious health problems after using it, you may be entitled to legal compensation.
