Invokana-risksA Louisiana woman recently filed an Invokana lawsuit against Janssen Pharmaceuticals, alleging that Invokana causes severe injuries.

Plaintiff Marie N. began taking Invokana at the direction of her doctor, and subsequently suffered a stroke.

According to her lawsuit, Invokana causes severe injuries like her stroke, and may continue to cause her damage over time as a result.

Other potential side effects noted in the lawsuit include kidney damage, diabetic ketoacidosis, cardiovascular disease, thromboembolic injuries and myocardial infarction.

According to the lawsuit, Invokana’s manufacturer Janssen Pharmaceuticals, a subsidiary of pharmaceutical giant Johnson & Johnson, either knew or should have known about the serious risks associated with the use of their drug.

However, the lawsuit claims, Janssen continued to market the drug as safe and effective, defending it against any allegations that Invokana causes severe injuries.

The lawsuit further claims that the company actively misled consumers and the medical community by concealing and minimizing information about Invokana risks.

Invokana Background

Invokana (also known as cangliflozin) was first introduced to the drug market in 2013 and is one of several major diabetes drugs called sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors. SGLT2 drugs make up a fairly new class of diabetes drugs, but have already become quite popular.

Part of the cause of the rise in the popularity of diabetes medications like Invokana was aggressive marketing tactics by Janssen Pharmaceuticals, which minimized risks and overplayed the drug as safe and effective.

Since the release of Invokana, the FDA has received a growing number of adverse event reports regarding the drug, and has required Janssen to add a series of warnings to the Invokana warning label.

The warning urged users to be aware of diabetic ketoacidosis symptoms like abdominal pain, fatigue, nausea, respiratory problems and vomiting.

According to a recent study published in the medical journal Diabetes Care, Invokana can slightly increase the risk of ketoacidosis. Diabetic ketoacidosis is a condition caused by high acid levels in the blood. Diabetic ketoacidosis can result in some serious symptoms, including:

  • Difficulty breathing
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Abdominal pain
  • Confusion
  • Fatigue
  • Sleepiness

These diabetic ketoacidosis symptoms can require urgent medical treatment, and can even result in major health problems. Though the increased risk is fairly low, the condition can result in severe health complications, even involving emergency hospital treatment.

Filing an Invokana Lawsuit

A growing number of injured consumers, amid the FDA warnings and recent studies, are pursuing Invokana lawsuits, alleging that Invokana causes severe injuries. These plaintiffs allege that the drug maker failed to adequately warn about potential Invokana risks.

These Invokana lawsuits claim that the drug makers actively withheld information about Invokana risks from both the medical community and the general public. Some of these Invokana lawsuits claim that the potential Invokana risks may outweigh its benefits.

If you or someone you love has suffered due to Invokana risks, you may be able to file a lawsuit.

While filing a lawsuit cannot reverse the side effects of Invokana, pursuing an Invokana lawsuit could result in financial compensation that would help with medical expenses and lost wages.

The Invokana Lawsuit is Case No. 3:16-cv-08133, in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey, Trenton Division.

In general, Invokana lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
